![]() 557 forum posts 38 photos | After reading LBSC's description of building "Roedean" (ME 4408) I was left puzzled by his logic on which features he included or omitted. He has included a 1/4" Dia. hole in the frames to replicate the slinging point of the full sized engine and an elongated hole that serves no purpose and was included as it is "merely a replica of the one on the big engine". Yet, he omits the smoke deflector plates, a prominent feature of the loco, on the grounds that they are not needed on the "little engine". One could probably argue the same of the third cylinder. |

![]() 3988 forum posts 1799 photos | Hi Eric, the elongated hole is in fact a lightening hole on the full sized engine, it's pupose is to cut down the weight of the frames in that area. Weather the model needs them or not, I don't know. The engine IMO would not look right without the lifting holes. I'm sure L.B.S.C. was right about the smoke deflector plates, but I'm sure he wouldn't have had any objections to anyone fitting them if they wished to do so.

The first ten Schools locos were built without smoke deflectors. Since Roedean was an imaginary member of the class dreampt up by LBSC I suppose he could decide.
3 cylinders and four coupled wheels in 3 1/2" gauge will need all the weight it can get, but preferably out of sight!
