Hi Guy's,
I have had this material for many years. I have no idea where it came from nor what it was originally used for however I would dearly like to source some more.

I would guess it is from the electrical trade but it is not phenolic based nor hard, like bakelite. It's very uniform in consistency, quite light with no indication of any layers, totally homogeneous in fact. It gives the impression it is paper based and turns crisply with ease and gives off no smell. The nearest thing I can describe it as being similar too is a fibre washer but it's far more compact. It turns far easier than standard fibre washers too!
As such it is abolutely perfect for making custom thin section 'fibre washers' for I/C engines and what you see is all I have.
So does anyone have any idea exactly what it is and more importantly where I may be able to get some. Yes I have tried various Google searches but as I don't know what it actually is that hasn't proved too successful.
Of course if anyone has a piece lying forlornly under the bench

Now before I get killed in the rush..............

Regards - Ramon

Hi Ramon,

I might be wrong but I think this is 'Vulkanfiber'. Seems the English word is Vulcanized Fibre, and it is made from paper:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulcanized_fibre

I hope this helps for searching more infos.

If I can trust my memory, it is available here from the plastics material distributors.

Greetings, Hansrudolf

Hi there Hansrudolf,

Thanks for the info. From what I have been reading that is exactly what it is.

After a good search on Google I can only find one company in the UK that has it in rod form. There is plenty of sheet available though in various thicknesses. I don't know if the company will sell a small peice but I'll try them next week.

Thanks for the PM Sam - it looks like the mystery is solved.

Well now I know what it actually is all I need now is to find a supplier so if you know of one .........

Regards - Ramon

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the link. I have had a good search but it does not look as if they list it however I will give them a ring this week

Despite that their list of materials is considerable so it's now bookmarked

Ramon Hi. My mate who ran a heavy duty water pump, outlet and service shop, gave me a few pieces of black, white, grey, and brown rods, up to 3' diameter, they were used to make seals, gaskets, and pistons, etc, So that could be a link there. Also I brought off e/bay a piece of oil filled nylon, similar to what is sold on the above site, I did intend to make the rotating part for a rear induction IC engine but that in the future.
