Drill Press upgrade with fine feed gear?

Has anyone tried upgrading your basic drill press with a fine feed attachment?
Any design ideas to share and is it important to house the worm and worm gear in an enclose casing?
I figure out that the worm gear would be part of the hand feed handle.
Thanks inadvance.

The only real snag with any design like this is that you have to have a means of detaching the worm drive so that the original handles can still be used. On our Warco Major mill/drill this is achieved by a friction lock that when loosened, releases the worm gear. The only other snag with the whole arrangement is that as Neil points out, bench drills are generally pretty crude in their quill arrangements anyway, and to make any serious use of an attachment like this (which I think is a good idea), you may well have to make arrangements to tighten up the workings of the whole quill to get all of the potential accuracy benefits. It's of interest to me, because I have a Meddings Pacera to rebuild, and adding a fine feed is something I've contemplated. |

comments. As it
happens, I did write an article on this mod at the end of March 2008. I
presume it is as they say, in 'The Pipeline'. Watch this space? Jim |
