I needed to hold some small square rod in the lathe. the 3 jaw was no good, the 4 jaw was too big so I used the collet chuck from the mill which has the same size taper.
the trouble is it will only hold very short items.
I've seen collet chucks to fit lathes but the cheapest was about £35.
so I had a go at making one, I already had the hardest part, the closing ring , so this is the rest.
front
back
with collet and closing ring. best bit was it only cost me £12.
that and a bucket of swarf

It's screwed.
I used the same thread as the closing ring so I had something to check the thread with.
I threaded the body first then held the disc in the 4 jaw, drilled through, turned the flange and marked the bolt holes.
after it was fitted to the lathe spindle I bored for an internal thread ( my first ) then screwed them together with threadlock.
after that I bored through and turned the taper for the collet( that was fun).
then I marked the body so it always go on the same way.
I got a total runout of a quarter of a thou with a piece of ordinary bms round.
cheers
