Thread: My subscription is running out |
17/12/2010 01:19:06 |
No Kwil it is not the same. The 32.95USD price is the ROW price similar to the 52.95GBP price fro MEW. For it to be the same there would have to be yet another price for Digital Machinist at 59.00USD applicable to UK residents only. If something like this exsisted I would be the first one to be in your corner backing your complaints. I would do this simply because I am Canadian. |
15/12/2010 04:05:26 |
I wonder how long this post will last? the last time this went round a lot of us were banned for some time or forever. I was promised by the web manager that somethig would be done to bring the Canadian price more into line with the ROW price. This was not to be.
Now I really like the magazine which is most unfortunate as I will not ,Indeed , can not accept the continued prejudice by the management of Model Engineer and MEW towards Canadians.
My subscription after many years will not be renewed. |
Thread: Digital Rev-counter |
08/12/2010 03:00:21 |
again thanks everyone for the replies. Ian I think your post will be a great help. I still haven't got back to this project due to other priorities. It's the Christmas season and we (our club) is doing some night running for the public. Cold but fun.

thanks all for your replies, since Douglas has built the thing and it works I can only assume I've made a boo in the build. I do have the right meter 0-5v so I'll go back over what I've done and see what I can find.I`ll let you all know what happens, may take a while as it`s a bit busy here just now.

I was hoping to find someone who has built the one in issue 147 of the MEW as I've already buit it and I'm probably just missing some detail in getting it to run. Dick Smith doesn't sell any kits, anymore at least not in the store I was in last month when I was on my annual trek to Oz. Anyway thanks for the reply.

In the MEW issue147 there is a build article for a digital rev-counter. Has anyone else built this item and if so what results did you get. I've been working on this off and on for some time and am having some problems. The counter lights up but does not display a count, remains at zero. the scope shows pulses at the output of the circuit that vary with RPM but cannot get the dispay to show them. Any ideas appreciated.

Thread: Joining a Society - contrasting experiences |
26/05/2010 04:59:27 |
my experience with ME societies has been very positive. When I joined my society I was welcomed with open arms, of course I'm not afraid of work. When I visit other clubs I am always made very welcome.
My experience on this forum however has not been so welcoming. My posts a normally attacked. I tried to warn a newbie not to buy cheap taps only to have it infered that I didn't know how to use a tap(my problems were my fault). I tried to encourage a thread on the use of ZA12 only to have the material diaparaged, end of thread. A member indicateed difficulty in obtaining adjustable dies, when I sent an off forum source rather then check it out it was stated that it would be too expensive and the previously unavailable item could be had just round the corner. But the crowning action was being censored and censured for expressing my opinion about a serious subscription issue.
Now I haven't been to the U.K. in many years but as a result of my expeerience here if I go I will be reluctant to go to the local ME society, I suspect that this will be my last post. |
Thread: Problems With Delivery of Issue 163 |
15/05/2010 04:45:02 |
Heather I received 163 not long back in British Columbia Canada. But why don't you wade into the N.A. subscription thread, lots of good feedback there. You're subscription manager aren't you? why leave it all to David? |
Thread: Ash from Chimney |
03/05/2010 04:05:07 |
We have an Little Engines Atlantic coal burner that we want to put a spark arrester on for fire prevention reasons and like you an external fitting would not look right. we are going to try an inverted cone inserted down into the chimney. you will not see it from the side but would be easily seen from the top. we want to be able to pull it out and give it a knock should it start to clog so we are putting a bar across the diameter at the top. Thread: Cutting Bevel Gears |
24/04/2010 22:45:39 |
I have both of Kozo Hiraoaka's Shay books and I just looked at them. In both casess he uses stock gears and reworks them to suit. Perhaps it is the Climax book,I don't have that one. |
Thread: 2-lugged vice in X-slotted drill press table? |
20/04/2010 04:25:56 |
Thats how mine was before I got the cross slide(on a diagonal) however it was always in the wrong place so I got the cross slide, now I can put the vice wherever on it or just clamp the work to the table and adjust the cross slide as desired. I haven't had it off in years. the cross slide wouldn't work on the diagonal as the long side fouled the drill press post. |
19/04/2010 18:46:56 |
On my drill press the table is free to rotate by releasing a tightening bolt underneath. I then turned the square table so that the slots run in left right front back pattern instead of an X and then fitted a cross slide table, a little fiddling to get it truly lined up. |
Thread: ZA12 - a new option for model engineers? |
10/04/2010 18:40:43 |
I have started to get into ZA-12 casting. I acquired some alloy from a supplier in the U.S. but later found out that it is available much closer here in Canada(Vancouver). I have yet to cast anything but I'm gradually gearing up. I'm exploring trying to make semi-permanent molds to cast multiple parts like axle box covers with my logo in raised lettering on them(1 1/2 inch scale). the alloy itself is widely used in industry so should be readily available. Just open the hood or bonnet of your car, all that greyish stuff is one of these alloys. or the mounting bracket in that burned out household appliance you just took apart. Now before you run out to the scrap yard there are a number of these alloys with specific properties and I can't find out how to single out ZA-12, the one most suited to our use. anyway lets hear the ideas. Thread: ME thread cutting |
06/04/2010 05:23:12 |
Hi Anthony
Yes you get what you pay for indeed. I thought that since I don't use ME or British Brass much that I would buy a cheap set and then over time replace the ones I used more often with good ones. I use UNF and UNC mostly(I have to run off 20 #5-40x1/4 bolts tomorrow) and have gotten used to paying not alot of money for good HSS taps and Dies. I have absolutly no problem with these and was unprepared for how poor the cheap ones were. of course cheap was still more then what I pay for unified. This time I will be more cautious and try to buy good ones the problem for me is that I have to replace more and quicker than I had anticipated.
Hi Robert
I will appreciate any comments you have, thanks

Hi Robert
could you post a comment on these taps and dies when you have tried them out? I have to replace mine and This time I want to get some good ones. |
02/04/2010 22:15:43 |
HI Eric
I bought a set of ME and a set of BSB from a regular advertiser of MEW because of the good prices. I am now in the position of having to buy again from somewhere else as the quality of those is so bad that they are unusable. The dies don't cut and the taps break. these tools are so bad that it calls into question the the very integrity of those who would sell such a thing and those who would advertise for them. You have been warned! |

Hi Stephen
Can you beg borrow or steal a good hydraulic press? Someone in your club may have one. All that tony says is very good but a press makes it all a little gentler. Mark then for position prior to removal if you want to reuse axles so that they will all go back on the same axle. I've done a few as well as many trucks. always find the press fit ones the easiest if they have loctite I put them in the press put a little pressure on and apply the torch to the back side until they let go. be sure that you don't have any pressure on the rim as you will break a spoke. Perhaps some one in your club will help if you were handy you could pop round and I would do it for you. good luck

suddenly today I can access the digital back issues, Thank you David. |

Hi Robert
Its a paper subscription that I,m on so I got my subscription number by e-mail from them. I've sent an e-mail to David as requested above so we'll see.
Hi Circlip
There are more issues then just the website, A long story I'm not going into here the topics have been put forward on other threads by other people with no results so I'm pretty sure I'm not doing the management an injustice. It seems that the only one working there is David, he can't do it all. |
