![]() 922 forum posts 332 photos | Stephen, As I recall from my time on a Super 7 in the late 50's, it disengages the spindle lock before engaging the back gear. No doubt you'll get an update shortly. Enjoy your Myford. I only wish I was younger and had access to one. Cheers, Sam |

7227 forum posts 21 photos | I think that Martin means "Disengaged" rather than "broken" Engaging back Gear and having the pulley / Bull wheel fixed to the spindle will lock up everything. Some folk use this method so that a chuck can be unscrewed, but risk damaging the gears. Hence the Spindle Lock to avoid such brutal practices. If a particlar lathe uses screw on chucks but lacks a Spindle Lock, there are less risky ways of unscrewing a firmly stuck chuck. Howard |

![]() 418 forum posts 15 photos | I think you would have to be a very strong man to strip the back gear when removing a chuck. Probably could sheer the locking pin too! Edited By Chris Crew on 27/09/2023 18:29:41 |
