Well, new to me. I was talking to a friend about lathes and engineering in general when he said “I’ve a lathe in lots of pieces and boxes, you can have it if you want to rebuild it”

As you can see, I’m loosely assembling it to see what might be missing. Quite looking forward to doing this.

Tidy job David..! Right place right time thumbs up

I'm only new to messing with machine tools, last couple of years - I should have listened to my metal work teacher in school.. he told me to stick with it but motorbikes etc took over and ended up with a bike shop - now seem to be getting more enjoyment out of doing them up a bit rather than using them!

Look forward to seeing it turning..beer

Looks like a little beauty. The thread chaser dial mounted to the left of the carriage instead of the usual right is unique. Easier to watch while keeping an eye on the cutting tool I suppose.

c7e22834-354a-4794-b107-714daa3bc797.jpegJust a sanity check please! I need to fabricate the bracket for the motor mounting which is missing. I’ve been looking on-line to see if there are photos of what it should look like and found these. On both photos it looks like the lathe will be running backwards. ( I do realise this post could make me look silly) 😊

Looks good, David.

No, that should work the right way, Myfords, Boxfords and my Taig are all arranged that way round.

If it doesn't, just reverse the motor devil

First let me join the list of admirers, David … That machine has great potential yes

Now; may I suggest that whilst you are busy on the drive system you seriously consider converting it to Poly-Vee

… I think it would be transformational

Make sure all the safety cut out switches are in operation for example the chuck guard needs to be down and gear train cover properly fitted

Thanks Rob,

You will not have known that the motor has a capacitor so not a brushed motor. I didn't think this could be reversed

but as always, I'm happy to be wrong.

Thanks Michael,

I hadn't thought about Poly-Vee belts as I've no experience with them. Are they a lot better? I'm presuming that the

original flat belts would be the worst option.

Poly-Vee belts have the flexibility of a flat belt, and better drive performance than a single Vee belt

  • Pulleys are readily available, and also easy to make
  • Millions of cars and domestic appliances use them

It has plain bearings - v-belts are already a step up from the original flat leather so why waste resources on new pulleys. If they slip a bit so what.

.

For one thing … the drive can be much more compact, because Poly-Vee can safely wrap round small diameter pulleys.

You will be able to do some good work on that machine as you nbecome familiar with it.

IF the motor runs in the wrong direction, reversing should be fairly easy.

Those who know more than I, will give you the detail of how to reverse the connections to the start windings.

Enjoy!

Howard.
