I made a pair of gunmetal bearing standards 4 thou too short vertically. I have some 4 thou brass shim, what's the best way to attach the brass to the gunmetal ?

You could soft solder them or use epoxy resin after abrading the mating surfaces with fine wet and dry paper.

If there are bolts through the pedestal base to hold it down you don't need to attach the shim

Doh ! blush Thanks, I can't imagine why I didn't think of that at the time.

And thanks for all the other suggested solutions folks, much appreciated.

Probably not, but I don't know enough about it to be sure of that,

You can also use super glue to hold in place while assembling, or use Loctite adhesives like the 648 or 620, but 620 is very slow to properly set. Deburr your shim and try to keep it flat as possible. It will only need glue on the outer perimeter, and try to keep it away from  the screw holes. A small amount of Oring grease around a hole on the part and around the hole of the shim, is usually enough to stop the glue from wicking to the threads.

Thanks Neil. Does anyone happen to know how thick a layer of superglue is ? (or solder ?)

As Roy says it won't make much difference if it's a horizontal engine, if vertical there is usually a bit of adjustment on the piston rod length.

If unsure of thicknesses then solder on something a bit thicker and machine back to what's required

Super glue and 620 can be as thin as 0.01mm, and if the surfaces are flat enough, then down to 0.005mm
