Hi all,

As per the title I am based near Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire. I am currently looking to buy a lathe for all those little projects so am here for knowledge and inspiration.

I try to keep wood turning, and enjoy making and repairing things. That's when the day job (as a gardener) doesn't get in the way

Regards

Tris

Hi Tris,

I happen to know of a lathe for sale (probably cheaply) in Gloucestershire, maybe near to you.

If you are interested send me your email address or phone number and I will pass them on to the relevant person.

I don't know details other than it has the overhead milling/drilling attachment similar to a Chester Centurion 3 in 1.

Greetings from the other side of the County, (Forest of Dean),

Always plenty of advice to be had here, whenever you need it.

Good luck with the lathe purchase.

Regards

Gray,

Thank you for the welcome.

Rex, I have sent you a message.

Gray, the Forest is a lovely area, since moving here we get down there as often as we can but it makes me realise what an odd shaped county this is

Hello Henry, thanks for the welcome.

You are in a lovely area there, had friends at Cropthorne and did my training at Pershore College more years ago than I care to remember

Welcome to the Forum.

You are near to my home county. (Too infrequently, I visit, to volunteer at The WaterWorks Museum in Hereford )

Close to the birthplace of Perry!

Which lathe you buy will depend on a variety of factors.

What you want to make

Budget (And allow for extras such as a 4 jaw chuck if it is not part of the package, and measuring equipment. DTI and a magnetic base with a 4 jaw, to centralise work ,more accurately than a 3 jaw can, drill chuck and so on )

Space

Whether you prefer new to used. If used, take someone knowledgeable to view and try any prospective purchase. Shiny paint might disguise a worn wreck, or one assembled from all sorts of parts, while an obviously used machine may have been better maintained.

Soon, you will need a bench grinder to sharpen High Speed Tools.

It can be a useful learning exercise to make some simple accessories. You gain experience and familiarity with the machines as you produce a tool that will ,be useful ,in the future.

A centre height gauge, die holder, and tap wrenches spring to mind

If you can find ma Model Engineering Club nearby, join it to meet fellow enthusiasts, who can also help and advise.

Buy some books on lathe work, they will help, and explain a lot of things.

Hello Howard and thank you for the welcome.

I spent part of my childhood in Herefordshire, growing up around Leominster, and remember Hereford when the cattle market was still in the centre.

I am fortunate to have inherited some tooling and measuring equipment, taps, end mills, etc. I'm at the working out what I want to do stage at the moment, so finding a club may be the next step

Regards

Tris
