I'm starting to set up my new to me mill, it has a table size of 800 x 240mm. I currently have a small 'toolmakers' vice with 3" x 4" jaw opening, I want to get a mill vice to fit on the table but don't really know what size to go for, 5" or 6" with the commensurate overhang or keep to a vice that stays within the boundaries of the table.

Thanks

Roger

I’ve never had a problem with the 6” (ish -160mm) vice on my TOS.

Table is 10” wide

A 6 inch English Abwood vice is very heavy, depends on age nd fitness to lift it onto the mill, I use a 4 inch vice on my Elliott 00 omnimill.

A 6" vice is most appropriate for a table your size.

Size of vice depends on size of work being held in it.

I have a 6" Abwood and am starting to think about a small hoist system for it. I have a 4" vice that is about half the weight but sometimes you just need the bigger one for a job. The 9" swivel based one hasn't been moved for a long time.

I have just sold a 4" Abwood as it was too big for my Centec and I lost too much table movement with it fitted. Opened to 2 3/4", weighed 12 kg.
