Hello everyone. Thanks for adding me to the group. I hail from South Africa and was a marine engineer for the first part of my career and currently earn my living with general engineering and fabrication.

I have been a model engineer for most of my adult life and have a second workshop to which I retreat when the world becomes too much. This workshop is equipped with a Myford ML7R, a Sieg mill, and my latest acquisition which is an Acorn shaper and which I am currently restoring.

My main interest is with stationary live steam engines but occasionally I will veer off and tackle something obscure that tickles my fancy. smiley

I look forward to interacting on this forum with all you good folk

Hello Paul.

I'm in Swakopmund, Namibia - the one and only 'Model Engineer' in the land...Originally from Johannesburg, been here near on 15 years now. Where are you located? - Coastal I presume...Near any tool shops you can get stuff from for me???

Welcome and join in the fray...

Joe

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Joe, actually I'm inland and in the mountains near the town of Underberg. Happy to help if you need tooling when I head to the big towns

Noted Paul - I know Underberg - A beautiful area! Away from all the rest of the nonsense...

Just pulling your leg re tooling Paul. I do find it becoming more and more difficult to get tooling in SA as well - the suppliers are catering more and more for the big CNC guys and not interested in the benchtop machine stuff - There are places like Ardendorfs, etc, but milling cutters made from mild steel are'nt impressive...

Take care Paul, and do post what you are up to!

Joe

Welcome aboard shipmate ! For stationary steam check out The Industrial steam Museum at forrncett St mary near Norwich. ALL their engines are in steam on open days. Since your in SA you will be familiar with the Garratt loco, the same family also have the Wells Walsingham Light Railway, the main traction is a pair of baby garratts, it.s the worlds longest 10.25" railway. Best wishes Noel.
