Flux for soft-soldering stainless steel

Can anyone recommend an easily accessible (ie no chemistry set required) flux that will allow me to soft-solder stainless steel?

Before you ask, I have to shorten some multi-strand stainless steel control cables of about 1.6mm overall diameter. I normally 'flash' these cables with a TIG welder, which prevents them turning into feather dusters at the end. But I am working today with some very flexible cables with particularly fine strands, which leave me with odd strands peeling out. Hence, prefer to solder these and then cut.

Cheers, Colin

Many off the shelf "rust killers" are phosphoric acid based and will work

Hi Colin

Jason is on the right track.

You can avoid the "killer delivery costs" by buying their stainless steel soft solder 2207 with a suitable flux core. Buy as much or as little as you need. The product can be sent through the post. Normal postal charges apply.

You also get an excellent colour match to the steel.

Why is it called 2207? One of my daughters was born 22nd July 😄

Chaps, thank you all for that help.

Keith's combination of ideas wins out for this small job. But I realise that it's 'an inside job'....!

Cheers, Colin

Hi "Hillclimber"

" Inside job?"

Please elaborate.

Delighted (?) that you were able to find the answer to your situation.

Keith, I was scratching around other soldering posts after placing my initial query here. And realised how much you contribute to the sum of knowledge on that subject here.

You totally nailed it for me (or at least created a low-temperature, bonded metal-alloy joint), as I was quite unaware of these cored specialist solders. Thanks again.

Cheers, Colin
