Solidworks help please

Hi

Does anyone know how to switch off this strange feature I've got myself into where the model has some but not all hidden lines visible. You will see it in the photo below. I thought maybe the computer isn't upto the job but my other models are fine. I am now running out of ideas of what to search for to fix this.

Not sure what version you are using, but on my screen at top centre of the graphics window you will see a cube icon with one side white the other side blue. It is just to the left of the eyeglasses icon. Anyway click on the part blue cube, and you can select the graphics display mode from solids with edges down to wireframe display.

If you select a setting and it does not change, you may need to reboot your machine, as the graphics card may be playing up. Just mentioning it, seen funny things happen with displayed edges / lines when the graphics card is having a bad day.

Thanks Jeff, its not the blue cube icon I think its something in the settings. Or maybe its a lack of computer power. It doesn't do it on any other models but they probably don't have as many parts as this. I don't have a separate graphics card in this pc and the reboot doesn't fix it either. It's probably not related but about the same time as the above problem the model practically disappears now when I use the other blue cube which is the view orientation. It used to stay as a large model on the screen but now it almost vanishes. I was wondering if I had a rogue point or something way out in space but I can't find anything.

I get the same symptoms with Fusion360 when adding parts to an assembly. If switched on the 'show hidden lines' feature is inherited from the part model and overrides whatever the assembly setting is. It allows the assembly to show or hide hidden lines part by part, which can be handy.

It's fixed by opening the part, changing the setting, and saving back. Not sure how Solidworks handles assembly dependencies, but in Fusion it's necessary for the operator to click a button to update the assembly after parts have been changed. (A little red flag appears warning the assembly is out-of-date and needs to be refreshed.)

I doubt it's your computer or graphic card; either a feature as described above, or maybe the model is corrupt.

There are a couple of things to try.

1. Sometimes sketches need to be hidden otherwise they show on models.

2. Tangent Edges might be turned to visible and that will show up on bend radii.

3. Have you set it to transparent by mistake, see here for an explanation.

If a model persists in misbehaving for some reason, try saving it as a Parasolid, then opening that again and saving it as a part, that seems to flush out gremlins in a lot of cases.

If you find which settings are best for you, I would save a copy using the save settings wizard in the start menu, then if it goes wrong you can always get back to a known starting point by restoring the settings.

You've fixed it!! I saved it as a parasolid (whatever that means) and it worked. Thanks so much I have wasted hours on this.
