ML7 tooling

What was the intended original size tools which were to be used with the standard tool post on a myford ml7?

I think the distance from the top of the cross slide to centre height is about 3/4" so the standard arrangement of a simple clamp could hold monster size tools.

Clearly it was never anticipated to use 3/4" tools clamped directly to the cross slide, but to use holders or packing with smaller tools.

Most people use an aftermarket toolpost to takes 8-10mm (5/16" - 3/8" tools.

1/4 in Nobody could afford to buy big lumps that are 90% ground away. The large capacity of the holder is for holding other tool mounts not so you have to get big lumps of tool steel. Use packing, it is normally free.
Don't come back with the crap about tool ridgidity - if it is a problem you are takeing too big a cut.

many thanks Neil i'll take a look at some 3/8" ones I've just found.

I'm fairly sure it was 5/8".

If you look at the Myford supplied tools at that period you will find that the Myford range included a boat with a curved upper face which allowed height setting without shims, albeit with changing clearance angles.

The size of the Myford tooling as fitted to the "Boat" is 1/2".. When fitted horizontally in the "Boat" the distance from the base of the Boat to the top of the tool is 23/32" . Hope that this helps although I used 1/4 " blanks when I has an ML7
