Gemco shaper finally fixed.

The down feed wasn't working and finally dug into it. The pawl was sticking and the key was missing from the downfeed lead screw/drive gear. Back in business!

I guess I don't know how it is pronounced... Hard of soft G? Because of the e - it should be soft... But no clue.

Looks like someone's initials + Co (mpany) or part of thier name. Like the Amolco milling spindle.

According to the Vintage Machinery web site, Bazyle is right - see here.

Also on the same web site there are a number of publications covering their shapers, including parts lists for all machines as well as semi-promotional literature and operating instructions. Some downloads are quite hefty but should provide some interesting winter lock down reading:

I expect it is a soft ‘G’ - but I doubt Gertrude would like being called Jertrude!
