WM180 lathe

Tailstock tooling

Hi all can anyone advise me if the tailstock tooling for WM180 lathe requires to be shortened similar to the standard mini lathe. It appears to be similar in many ways.

I have a WM180 and haven’t found the need to shorten tail stick tooling

Can you give an example where this might be needed?

If it's anything like my 280 then you can gain an extra 20mm of tailstock travel by cutting off any tangs or using threaded tooling with a piece of studding screwed into the hole, without this the tooling can eject when there is still a lot of barrel extended.

like Jason I use threaded tooling which also can be used on my small mill - don't forget the threaded endscrew (I made my own but ARCeuro sell them) otherwise you have to dismantle the tailstock to extract the tool

The problem with using the screw in tangs that ARC do is they stick out the back and that is what causes the tool to eject too soon, better to saw a slot on the end of some studding so it can be screwed in flush.

The Screw in tangs are best kept if using threaded tooling in a drill press or adaptor sleeve so a wedge can be used to eject.

Well, you learn something new every day. I don't have any "un-tanged" tailstock tooling. I'm just careful not to wind back the quill too vigorously. But I have noticed that my revolving centre is fitted with a Button Head Screw, extending it by about 3mm. Seems to work OK, giving pretty much full quill travel on my WM240.

ARCeuro used to sell a flatheaded screw which is what I had in mind as well as the Tang but the former is easy to make
