Rivets

A BIG MISTAKE PERHAPS?

Some time ago I made my Pansy footplates complete with holes for dummy rivets to be glued into place. I then sprayed them with grey car primer to prevent rust. I now want to glue the rivets in place. I can easily remove the paint from the flat surface but how on earth do I remove it from inside the holes? Any suggestions guys?

Hi Peter. I would suggest using a hand reamer of the same size of the original hole. This will only take out the paint and not enlarge the hole for the rivets.

If the paint is stuck to the footplates, which I suppose it is, and the glue sticks to the paint, where is the problem?

Do the rivets fit with the paint in? If so glue 'em in, paint and all, per Duncan's suggestion.

At the school model railway club a long time ago we had a visit from a prize winning locomotive model maker who, before the advent of super glue, used to use a tiny blob of paint to hold details like lamp irons onto 00 gauge loco models - until he sent one to be professionally painted and the first thing they did was to degrease it by dumping it in a bath of solvent - when all of the super details promptly fell off!

The horn plates and tender on my model traction engine have lots of false rivets. The holes on the back of the plates were countersunk. The rivets shank cut slightly thicker than the plate and then bashed with a ball peen hammer to fill the countersink. Then painted everything.

My thoughts were leaning towards 'glue 'em in paint and all. Will try a few and see what happens. Nothing to loose after all.
