On/off at the top with red green lights. What edge finder I?

The engineering company was predominately Bridgeport CNC and this was in a cupboard that was being cleared.

The on/off switch is on the top, red green lights signal the depression of a switch on the side of the device.

I know it must be some kind of edge finder but does anyone know if it is Bridgeport or what machine it is for?

Any help greatly appreciated.

From your description it sounds like a tool length setting gauge in the Z axis, a photo would be helpful.

Could it be a custom Go/NoGo indicator, for one hole size ?

[Daniel] ... Try putting a micrometer where thumb and finger are currently shown, to check when the lights switch.

Not a sausage. I even opened it up and there is nothing to hint as to what it is. It’s not “Heath Robinson” so I can only think that it is commercial but from who is anyone’s guess hence coming to the fountain of all knowledge.

Thanks for pitching in. you got me thinking and I have found the lights are confusing.

On the one side is a ground hard stop of 12mm diameter. The other side is the plunger that has a travel of 2mm.

the battery could be on its last legs (4SRR44 Photo batter 6.2V silver oxide) but still measures 6.2v output.

….the lights were working and now they are not…. Bugger

I think Tony P got it with z axis setting. Try the micrometer as suggested by. Michael G and see what repeatability is like (when it is working again) .

Thanks Guys, I will get another battery and give is another bash.

I doubt that it is made for use with CNC as it doesn't appear to have any connection for the probe input.

It isn't a tool height setter (i.e. Z axis) because the button operating axis is at right angles to the longitudinal axis which would go in the chuck.

It wouldn't be a useful edge finder because they need rotational symmetry which this doesn't have at the business end.

The configuration is reminiscent of a telescopic bore gauge, but the end of the cylinder opposite the button seems to be machined flat, which wouldn't allow it to contact the bore at a single point.

What it would do is act as a go/no-go gauge to measure a slot width, that's what I think it is.
