How to disassemble a Tom Senior M1 mill for cleaning & de-rusting?

I recently acquired a Tom Senior M1 mill with S vertical head. Unfortunately parts of the bright steel work have some surface rust and it generally wants some disassembly+cleaning+re-greasing.

I've only owned a Myford ML7 before, and am generally quite new to metalwork, so I am anxious about any dissambly of this beast of a mill!

I bought a cobbled together Senior manual off of ebay but it's not much help, lots of technical drawings without much else (in contrast to the Myford ML7 manual with thorough narrative/much more beginner friendly.

If any fellow Senior owners can give clear instructions on

e.g how to remove the table and knee, that would be very helpful.

Any help gratefully received.

Industrial machine manuals are usually like that, American ones are an exception to the rule.

Hi there.

I did an article in MEW a couple of years ago on the refurbishment of an M1. Neil may be able to direct you to a digital version.

Best regards. Mick

Lovely Mick, I'll message him now. As I said I'm quite new to this hobby, and definitely want to take my time and not cut corners.

Please tell me which issue your article was in Mick, so that I can order a back copy. Thanks.

That's very kind, thank you Ian. If you could scan both halves of that M1 article, that would be lovely - I owe you one.

Let me know if you have a scanner, and I'll message you with my email address.

Hi Abder there a a few members on here who have the Tom Senior mill. I have the light vertical model. Different from yours but similar size.

I am sure you will get all the help you need on here from the members who have them & even some from members who do not. A fine old machine to have in the workshop. Good luck with the renovation. I have many pictures in my albums if you go to my pictures & look at milling machine. Regards.

Steve.

Put Tom Senior in the keyword and manual machines in the topics at the top of the page, and then save in your browser favourites. There is a wealth of info to read through.
