Emco FB-2 Wiring

I have an Emco Maximat Super 11 which had the FB-2 milling head attached to the back of the lathe bed 220/240v. I have been able to buy an FB-2 type stand with table and have fitted the head to the Milling table. Unfortunately, all the manuals refer to electrical insulation as a mill head attached to the lathe bed, the capacitor being installed within the lathe electrics, the on/off switch being integral on the side of the motor. head The cable that comes out of the Motor/Switch housing has three wires which are marked 1,2,3 what I would like to know if anyone can help as to how I can wire the capacitor in and then a live and nutural feed into the circuit? If anyone has experience with this I would appreciate your help. |

If you don't have a schematic then it's a matter of tracing the wiring out to work out how it was connected and therefore how it should be. Maybe if you can take the cover off that switch and posted a photo of how the wires were connected inside it would help? |

![]() 2747 forum posts 123 photos | Richard, wiring diagrams (and lots of other files and information) is all available on the 'emcoV10lathe' Yahoo Group. I have the same column and head as you do waiting for me to graft it on to an earlier Emco mill (4 speed head) but its not as (mechanically) as simple as I hoped so I have not even looked at the motor yet. I dont know for certain, but the motor may really be a 3 phase one, certainly the 4 speed motor which uses a capacitor to run on single phase is actually a proper 3 phase motor so I run mine of a VFD with all the attendant benefits. 1323 forum posts 1431 photos | Hello Richard, I have a full manual for the FB2 but the spindle motor wiring is not well detailed, at least not as well as the coolant pump or the X axis drive motor! A photo below shows what I have - R an Mp seem to be mains input. The block numbers 1 to 5 is a connection block L1 to which the X drive and coolant pump are optionally connected. The motor Z1 and U2 I would suspect are the connection 1 on your motor wires. U2 and Z2 would be your wires 2 and 3 , but I am not sure in what order, one being the capacitor winding, the other the direct winding? Other motor experts can chip in here...I would think the resistance of these two windings differ and that with an ohmeter one could work out which is which? Otherwise the connection is quite easy - Do you have the wiring diagram of the connection on the lathe? I am sure once could discern the motor wire numbering from that. The switch B1 in this case is a no-volt fall-out protection switch - not really needed - a simple 2 pole switch is fine. Joe

The wires that come from the motor head and the capacitor where they were connected are shown on the right-hand side. I will also upload a few of the photos that I took when I disconnected the milling head from the lathe. Any help is appreciated. thanks, Richard |

631 forum posts 14 photos | Emco motors are a bit peculiar and their schematics leave much to be desired. I've had two of the 4 speed milling heads, one 3 phase and one single phase. The single phase motor was actually a 3 phase delta connected motor with the line and neutral connected to (any) two of the wires and the capacitor connected between line or neutral (depending on which direction you want the motor to run) and the other wire. To confirm, use a multimeter to check the resistance between the 3 black wires, 1-2, 2-3, 1-3, they should all be the same. Daveb |

1323 forum posts 1431 photos | Did you manage to connect the motor up Richard? The sketch I gave should do it for you. Interested to know how it goes. Joe |

1323 forum posts 1431 photos | Hi Richard. I am not sure what the issue is now... You already gave that diagram ( 3 diagrams up) with the text that indicated which wire number went to which connection number. In the drawing you have now provided, you have shown exactly the same, only diagrammatically this time. Both are valid/correct. From that diagram, all I did was extract a simple connection diagram. connect MAINS LIVE to motor winding labelled 1 connect MAINS NEUTRAL to motor winding labelled 3 The capacitor -( wire colours are not important) simply connect one wire to motor winding 2 and and the other to motor wire 3. And connect the earth wire to ground, of course.. I have not included the control switch in my diagram - I see in your photos the (rotary) switch is on the motor side. I assume the 3 wires labelled 1,2 and 3 from the motor already have the switch in line, so just connect the wires as I have described and all should work.
Joe

5 forum posts 7 photos | Hi Joe, I have been looking at the wiring diagram and notice that Emco mark incoming lines as R and Mp do you know why they don't use L Live and N Neutral? The Emco FB-2 manual that I have says Mounting the plug for Electric Connection Single Phase Version The yellow-green wire is connected to the grounding contact, The Blue and Brown wires (Mp,R) are connected to the other contacts. So is it that Mp = Neutral (blue) and R = Live (brown). Thanks, Richard

1323 forum posts 1431 photos | Hi Richard, Yes, Blue is Neutral and Brown is live - so I think you have it correct there! The motor won't care if you swap them, but as normal, make sure the LIVE is the one that is switched - I think in any case the rotary switch on the mill motor switches both live and neutral, ie, it is a dual pole switch.
