Reeves' Ratchet Gear for lubricators

I've just ordered another 7/16 ratchet wheel from Reeves to replace one that I don't like the look of. To their credit they did offer to replace it free of charge but I'd already rebored the centre so just bought one again.

My beef with the original is that the teeth look very shallow, and not very hard. They say they have been selling that exact type for almost two decades but it isn't very deep at all. Has anyone else used a Reeves ratchet for their lubricators and did it work ok? I'm not experienced enough at this to judge it well.

Apologies for the lack of photo but its out in the workshop and I'm recovering from surgery and don't feel like braving the cold!

Jon.

Ahh.... so I am not the only one who has received duff gears from Reeves. But at least they offered to replace yours Jon. I bought a worm and pinion for a Minnie traction engine from them a few years ago. I have only recently started on the Minnie again and when I made the steering parts it became apparent that there was no way it was going to work due to the worm pinion having completely different size teeth on one side of the pinion compared to the other. Reeves sell the worm and pinion for ?68 so they are not cheap. . Unfortunately as I have not got the purchase receipt anymore Reeves said " we have sold 100s of these over the last 10 years without a problem " and they won't entertain a replacement or refund.

I have fond the worm and pinion for about ?27 from HPC gears and even though their postage is expensive they still work out at ?44 delivered. Which is considerably cheaper than Reeves.

(I would post a photo but I am very new to this forum thing and I cannot see how to)

Legally you have 30 days to return faulty goods for a full refund, although if to 'inspect and accept' the goods reasonably takes longer you may be able to extend this (e.g. hidden blowholes appearing in a casting), but you should still have proof of purchase.

To be fair to Reeves, my experience is that they will happily replace faulty goods with a receipt beyond the 30 days (in fact they let me keep the faulty casting).

On another occasion I had a casting I had for a few years with no receipt and they wouldn't replace it, which was fair enough - I should have spotted the fault the day I bought it.

Bear in mind that the unscrupulous may pick up castings or parts at shows/boot sales and try it on.

I did say in my reply to Reeves that I accepted their response. It was as I anticipated and above board and as you so rightly say I should have inspected the parts when I received them. And I cannot expect them to trust my integrity. But as I have another 20 years (hopefully!!) or so of model engineering ahead of me I know where I won't be sourcing parts again.

I, for one, would be very interested to see some comparison photos of Reeves vs HPC offerings.

I have managed to create an album with the pinion comparison photo but I think that you need to be running a pc or mac to post it. I have only got Android now and the camera icon does not show.
Is it possible to post pictures using Android ?
