TESLA PowerWall Installation?

Hi All,

Here is a weird one for the electrical gurus!

I have an opportunity to buy outright a new unused latest type TESLA PowerWall unit and installation kit.

14kw rating. This is from someone who bought it and is now not able to have it installed.

What are my options for installation? I already have a 4kw Solar PV array which works great and is a great little earner!

Can this be installed by any competent electrician or must I go to the 'official' installers who want an arm and both legs to sign it off? Mainly because they have not supplied the unit.

What are the potential pitfalls and problems her please?

Regards, Martin

If memory serves they come with a 10yr warranty so the only major hurdle would be whether that is honoured when installed by ANOther. There's a darned good chance that Tesla have made videos of the installation process. I just bought a model S and they have vids of it's major functions as as well as vids of installing their own charging unit (simple enough). Their fees for non warranty fixes are scary.

Martin,

You will find much reference to 'certified installers' here: **LINK**

dont know ... It may, or may not, be a simple matter.

What about whoever supplied the unit to the seller?

I haven't gone hunting for powerwall vids.. just watched the car and car charging unit ones (but I guess you don't want a link to them).

By coincidence I was looking at this (localish to me) site recently and they supply powerwalls and presumably install them - doubtless can give advice.. link: **LINK**

Perhaps with their esp they'll call you first

Hi All,

I never did go for the Tesla PowerWall I started this thread about as I could not make the numbers work for me regarding payback.

However with the new massive price hikes it may be worth revisiting this.

Does anyone actually have one or know someone who does have one?

My Solar PV is still going strong and is without doubt the best investment I have ever made!

All thoughts welcome please.

Cheers, Martin

For what its worth I contacted the company (Roxon in Gloucester) that installed our solar panels about a battery system, I had asked about batteries when they did the original fitting maybe six years ago [edit to add installed in 2013!] and they said it wasn't worth it for my usage. I asked again recently and this was their response:

"It’s an interesting question and one Roxon is being asked more and more.

The following is a reply that was sent this morning to another customer and the same principles will apply to you, namely that the electricity you get from your battery will probably cost more than buying from the grid, even though it was yours to begin with. At best it might save you a few pence per unit but you’ll have spent £3-4,000 for the privilege.

"The software predicts that adding a battery would increase your rate of self consumption from the PV from about 55% to 75%.

About 7.5% of the DC output is lost in the battery charge / discharge process so your additional energy would be equivalent to an extra 1,250kWh per year, worth about £395 at the typical present tariff of 30p/kwh plus VAT.

There are other ways of adding value to a battery of course, like off peak charging but I can’t calculate the benefit. Also, potentially, protection from power cuts, so I’d be happy to quote for a battery solution if of interest."

I have had discussions with Dave (Samsaranda) about his set up and it seems that you need to be on one of the economy tariffs and have a high electricity usage to really make it work.

Not sure what has happened above as some of my post is hidden by the adverts on the RH side. Perhaps a Mod could delete the post please. Here it is again:
