How to apply etch primer without damaging the internals of an airbrush?

Hello all,

A beginner question: I recently bought a Harder & Steenbeck airbrush. However now that I'm planning to repaint some aluminium castings, using a proper non-ferrous etch primer, I'm loath to use this airbrush to apply said etch primer due to it's chemical behaviour.

Therefore, do others use a cheap second airbrush for applying such primers. Can someone recommend a particular model?

Thanks in advance.

I've used the fairly cheap Badger basic airbrush with Precision Paints etch primer for an Allchin TE and a 5" Simplex. I also use it for normal enamels. I've not noticed any discernable effect from the etch primer and I'd probably use it with my more expensive DeVilbiss airbrush if need be.

Thorough cleaning after use is obviously needed.

A few of us were discussing this at a recent club night and the general consensus was to use a cheap airbrush for acid etch primer. I use an old Badger 200 for etch primer.

I paint quite a lot of alluminium castings mainly plaques & signs etc and also my models brass alloy steel etc, I'm fanatical about cleaning my brushes sprayguns & airbrushes, & I prime with ICI acid etch primer [don't think it's available any more] but I allways brush it on as it's thin & doesn't leave brush marks or runs, you can't tell if it's brushed or sprayed, my brush is immediately washed out in cellulose thinners, I use celly thinners for cleaning house painting brushes as well much superior to white spirit.

You're probably right Niel, simpler to use aerosol etch primer.

Please specify the product you use - ideally I'd like to use one for al of: brass, nickel-silver and aluminium-based casting on Myford.

Would something like this work?

https://www.amazon.com/Critter-Spray-Products-22032-Siphon/dp/B00006FRPJ/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1528241362&sr=8-15&keywords=paint+spray+gun

It would seem a relatively simple job to make one starting with a blow gun.
