Acto Surface Grinder

Hi all,

I found this company while trawling the interweb looking for a used surface grinder. No where to put it yet, but one can dream. Anyhow this company Acto (or Machinery Plans) offer plans for a surface grinder and the one on their website looks like a solid unit. Has anyone built one of these, or perhaps another machine from Acto and what are your thoughts on the quality of the plans, and the final product?

Any advice appreciated!

Edit:  Never mind, Mark .... the Machinery Plans site was easy enough to find and looks very interesting. Can't answer your question but thanks for the info.

First impression is that column and slide holding the wheel head is quite flimsy, at least compared to my commercial surface grinder. While cutting forces are low any flexiblity can result in wheel bounce and a wavy finish.

Many thanks for the replies gents. I'm glad you were able to find the website Bandersnatch, the shaper on their site looked intriguing too. Andrew, you raise a good point. Comparing the acto wheel head column to other makes does seem to show it rather flimsy and possibly prone to deflection as well as twist. Pity there don't seem to be any examples on the usual forums, it would be interesting to get some user feedback.

Yes, I looked at the shaper too.

At a quick look I assumed the plan prices were in £ but then noticed that they are in Aussie $ (about equal to a CDN $ for me) which makes them much more attractive.

About the grinder: it does look flimsy but I think it depends a bit on the size/scale which is hard to to figure. The only info is the "250mm x 150mm capacity" which is not huge.

I was thinking to make a small one, something my descendants can easily discard after I have gone.

I think putting the grinding head on a vertical slide looks like a bad idea because it would be quite happy coming down in an arc. So long as that arc tilts on the same axis as the spindle, it could be sprung against an end stop and very rigid..
