Early Stuart 10V?

Hi All,

I was given this model by a friend the other day. It was built by his father, he thinks around 1930. I have added one photo with my own partially completed 10V alongside for comparison. Any help identifying the model would be greatly appreciated.

Hi John,

This looks like an early version of the No. 1, also made by Stuart’s but yours seems to have a homemade base.

Stuart’s still produce this model, it’s quite a fine engine in my opinion.

Your initial assumptions were correct. An early version of the 10V which had a single supporting column rather than the trunking of the modern 10V. The design was changed around the late 20's early 30's I believe. Here is one I restored a few years ago.

I seem to remember that this engine located at my near neighbour's little museum was identified as a ST 10V of some vintage. Sorry about the clutter, but Matt will insist on collecting junk, sorry, motor bikes.

The No7 was also originally the same open frame design until they put it on the A frame standard and changed the number to 7A. As a display model this style is a bit more appealing as you can see more of what is going on.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the info and photos. There was no "S" on the valve chest cover which threw me a bit. Looks like a nice wee restoration project as there is a fair bit of slop in the con rod and the eccentric sheave. My friend thinks it has not been run since the 60's or 70's but it does turn over just fine.

Hi everyone,

I have quite a few Stuart Turner model engines as castings, part built and completed including some old variants, the idea was to work on when I retired 6 month ago (missed the money so went back to work, but that's another story).

Recently I purchased half of what I think is an early 1920-30's model 10 engine with 3" flywheel, it seems similar to John & Grahams models above.

The soleplate seems the same size as my more recent 10V's and a 10V cylinder seems to fit on top. I suspect that many of the 10V/10H/Score spares I have could fit or be modified to fit to enable me to complete it.

I believe that Stuart Turner no longer have any of the old original drawings (I asked at a show once about drawings for my early S50). Does anyone have a copy of the early Model 10 drawings? (I already have the 10v & 10H drawings but believe that the early models used Whitworth threads).

Any help would be much appreciated
