I used to have an old round column Warco mill and could remove metal with ease using a 3/4” end mill.
Now have a Warco VMC which is fine for much of my work but heavy cuts are not recommended.
My problem is sometimes especially if a cutter digs in the head can be moved and has to be trammed again despite retaining bolts being tight.
When I had use of a large universal mill ( by ME standards) it had a locating pin to set the vertical head true.
Wondered if I can do that to the VMC has anyone done that.
Or are the VMC head castings a little weak to modify?
Thanks for any helpful information to stop the head moving.
Am at the moment milling webs on en24t 150mmØ crankshaft.
A bit of a slow job compared to my speed nut friends CNC machining centre but I enjoy making the parts myself instead of farming jobs out to others.
Been a while since my medical problems and lost a year of model and machining in earnest but now seem to be hopefully firing on all cylinders.
Great to be swarth manufacturing again after seeing a young manual machinist with a young family who lost use of his hand movement etc. in the Ward I was in due to serious cancer.
We became ward friends as both having a love of machining but manual machining has gone for him hopefully training in CNC will keep him in a job he enjoys.
Tonight on BBC1 8pm Without Limits: Vietnam.
Andy Swinging Arm Slade and his group will be in the second episode Andy has been officially timed a year ago at 222mph at Elvington on his motorcycle not bad having only half an handlebar to use.
He might be at Pendine speed record attempts
The Model Engineering and speed attempts whether water or land is like a big family and helpful advice is always available.

Ian S C Bolivia could be the next place to replace Bonny the Ack Ack worlds fastest bike team tried it sounds just the place. The Cook speed event is on at Bonny at the moment.

![]() 910 forum posts 197 photos | Ian S C you've got me going about my favorite subject I always wanted to ride at Bonny in the 1970's. Here is a link to Ack Ack and Bolivia etc. The VMC mill the head moved in the vertical and horizontal plane have just checked with DTI. So easy to overdo things on bigger machining items I need a slap on the wrist to keep within the mills limitations. I know this has been repeated numerous times but wear safety specs so easy to be a casualty. Edited By Windy on 21/09/2017 14:00:11 |

6 forum posts | I have a VMC mill but I have doubts about putting on big cuts in En24t I don't think the head assembly is rigid enough to cope. By all means do it in aluminium or something but just be careful. If you are really anxious to fit a locking pin there may be enough metal on the flange to do it, maybe fit two small pins, it may be easier. |

6 forum posts | I just wanted to say that I worked on industrial milling machines before I retired and I know that they could cope with heavy cuts if required. But nowadays I build stuff for fun and I am in no hurry so the VMC has been a great machine for model engineering size parts but it does have its limits , it ain't a Bridgeport!

![]() 785 forum posts 152 photos | You would be right to have doubts about putting "big cuts " in En 24t on the VMC [ although it depends on what your idea of a big cut is ] Certainly a nice steel to machine [ superb surface finish ] even with hobby sized machines as long as the cut is within the capabilities of the machine. In fact even the Inconels, Udimets, ect can all be machined on smaller machines, just don't treat hobby machines like they are DSG's or Hermle's |
