Well, here she is folks. The Rose in her final form. Sure there is a little QA that needs to happen, but here she is.

There's a few blobs and bits to attend to with the coal fired version, but that will go by fast. Of course it's also high time I triple check my work, but here's the first locomotive of the series, done.

That leaves me with...

0 Gauge
-Bayer Garrett (sort of a hybrid, requires Sir Morris De Cowley drawings)
-Cracker
-Diesel Outline
-Minnehaha
-Miss Therm
-Mollyette
-Myrtle
-Steam Mouse

1 Gauge
-Amy
-Chingford Express
-Daisy Drummond
-Dyakette
-Ford Pacific
-Little Jack Horner
-St. Hildas
-WD Stanier

2.5" Gauge
-Economary (also in 0 gauge as Economette, 1 gauge as Miss Economy)
-Bass (Also in 0/1 gauge)
-Mabel Hall
-Nippy
-Sterling Single
-Victoria
-Ajax
-Annie Bodie
-Belle Stroudley
-Canadian Switcher
-FIRS 245 (Six Year Old's 4F)
-Judy
-Kingette
-Lady Kitty
-Mary Ann
-Pansyette
-Pixie
-Rose
-Simple Sally (there are FOUR versions of this one, thankfully it won't be hard)
-Talula
-Lucy Anna (also in 0 gauge)
-Speedyette (also in 1 gauge)

3.5" Gauge
-Dairy Maid (also in 2.5” gauge)
-Duchess of Swindon
-Ivy Hall
-Sister Dora
-Zoe (also in 1 gauge)

5" Gauge
-Eva May (tender and tank. also 2.5" gauge)
-Minx
-Netta (0-5” gauge, because I am a masochist)

The bold faced designs are the ones that I either have the article series for or a great deal of the article series for. A fair number of these designs also fall into the "easy" or "toy" category. If I am aloud to purchase photocopies of the article series (or magazines from anyone willing to sell them) that would greatly speed things along.

Now that the Rose is scratched off the list basically, it's time for the Pixie. Why? Lots of shared parts with the Rose.

I guarantee this one will go by quickly. I hope that I can purchase some photocopies from the folks at the National 2.5" Gauge Association, the Bass and the Zoe are the two I am really excited to get done!

Literally this took me 45 minutes at the most? The wheels are loosely based off of the Ancient Lights wheels- the ones I'm drawing, at least. The discs are just slugs of sort.

Looks pretty impressive.

I notice 'Rainhill' is not on your list. A couple of years ago I started modelling it from a TEE re-print of the magazine articles. Then my workload increased & I had to put it to one side before it was finished & had forgotten it until your article:

Richard.

Looks great Dean. Irt is a nice looking engine and can be quite simply to suit quite a few different prototypes. The 2.5 Gauge Association don't hold copies of Bass or Zoe, but I'm sure the drawings people will be in contact to see what we do have that is of interest to you. The Association can supply castings for Rose, and AFIK this design is not cataloged or stocked by any of the UK suppliers so its really good to see it being brought back from the forgotten wilderness so to speak. Keep up the good work.

Kind regards

Brian.

I said masochist not sadistic!
Kidding, I have considered trying that one, but I would rather try that after I figured out how to animate the Walschaerts/Stephensons/Baker valve gears.

Brian,

I can't thank you enough for all the support that you have shown to me sir. It has been a huge help, I can't wait to finish more of these and hopefully do some good for the N25GA in some form or fashion .

The bass was published all at once in 1930 in English Mechanics, around the same time an O scale 0-6-0 version of the Bass was published in Model Engineer (Miss Therm). What makes the Bass and the Therm design so interesting is how similar they are- in theory I could imagine that it would not be much of a chore at all to make an 0-6-0 Bass in 2.5" gauge.

As far as the Zoe is concerned, I guess I have a penchant for narrow gauge locomotives.

Best regards, and thank you once again,
-Dean

Richard,
The Rainhill is one of my favorite locomotives that Curly did (I have a soft spot for early locomotives) however, there is one key difference between it and the ones that are on the list. The ones that made my list are models that I have not been able to find the drawings for and have been lost to the wilds if you will- and keeping them from being lost entirely.

Regards,
-Dean

I'm no hero, not in the least. More like a daft 29 year old bachelor that has a penchant for CAD.
The CAD work will be donated to the National 2 1/2 Gauge Association when I am done.

The Pixie is coming along famously, don't expect this sort of pace to happen much (at least I don't think) where I have the mechanism correctly set and ready to go in such a short time frame. The Pixie will be REALLY easy to do thankfully, it shares enough parts with the Rose to almost be a relation.

So I'm almost done with Pixie's tender. Almost being the key word. I still need to put in the dummy coal bunker, change the coupling links, etc. Oh yes, and buffers. This locomotive along with the steam mouse Garrett are going to be a pair of headaches that I will have to actually attempt to dimension the pictures from the magazine in order to pull them off as closely as possible to what LBSC had intended.

Another REALLY good reason to omit the insides of the boilers has come up: given the choice between the burner in say the Cracker (which is placed inside the boiler) vs the spirit burners that Curly used in his designs, I would opt for the Cracker style- if that would work. Since I am not familiar with these designs or that one enough to make that kind of call, it would be best if for the time being that I just stuck with the design as laid out by Curly.

Regarding the Pixie, this locomotive is the spitting image (not the television show) of the Rose in terms of the boiler. She has a sister, the Nippy (which I almost am willing to bet will prove something I have speculated for a while, that Curly would slightly change and then reprint old designs into another publication) that uses a more... realistic valve gear.

I am fairly sure that the Rose's coal fired boiler adjusted slightly would work splendid on the Nippy and result in a toy locomotive being transformed into more of a serious model. For this model, I decided to draw some inspiration from Ancient Lights, since it was once a toy as well. The wheels will be loosely based around the same design, as well as other details- of course done in situations where it would not detract from the original design of the Pixie.

Oh,

So I did get bored and dicker about a bit with the Steam Mouse 2-2-0+0-2-2 Garrett.
I think I might have a soft spot for these mammoths since:
A. My grandfather was a controller for the Portuguese railways in Mozambique (big shocker, I'm half Portuguese, I had more facial hair than most American men by the time I was 12)
B. A good friend of mine actually went to Zimbabwe to photograph them and I found myself more interested in these mammoths.
C. Because- no reason. Just because.

This little guy is going to require some serious dimension work from the magazine drawings to pull off right, and would say is a PRIME candidate for a boiler like the Cracker, since it has basically a trough underneath it for some spirit burners.

One other note: I did add cleading to the boiler on the Rose.
It just looks wrong with out it.

I decided to toy around with the Steam Mouse a bit. Mostly because I have a large share of it done. There are a few issues I encountered but otherwise it's going smoothly.

Quick update: So I have started on trying to dimension out the drawings. The sketch in the magazine is not accurate, so I am afraid that this might result in a slightly (very slightly) different look for the mouse. I'll do my best to make it not noticeable.

Well... I didn't expect this, but I could very well have the Steam Mouse done this weekend.
I had every intent of doing the Pixie first, but I think that I goofed a little and will end up having the Mouse done before hand.
