Anyone know where to get something like a 8.5 x 1 mm tap? I've seen them offered in the US and Germany but not over here so far.

I think that is used for pen making, try some of the specialist pen part suppliers

A search for Gewindebohrer 8,5 x 1 (German uses a comma for decimals) threw this up **LINK** .

At that price I'd rather try to make my own from Silver steel.

Try Tracy Tools or The Tap and Die Company in the UK, they may make you one cheaper than that.

It's not a standard pen thread that I know of, but I certainly don't know them all. The best & cheapest place for pen related taps in the UK is Beaufort Ink. Sorry, no link as I'm on a tablet and it won't play with the forum link buttons. Their taps are M7.9x0.6 at the size closest to M8.5x1

Regards

Richard.
