Hi, I have just been given some 150mm Kunifer pipe 4mm wall, has anyone used this for building a boiler before? My Internet searching has drawn a blank.

There is a lot of good information at **LINK**

There are 2 grades, I'm not sure it makes any difference. There is a UK supplier at **LINK**

if you give them a ring and ask to speak to techy people they might help. At the end of the day it's down to your boiler inspector

Im only guessing here(its been 30 years since I last sat in a metallurgy class) but nickel is added to the copper to make it more ductile, and a ductile boiler isn't something I want to be near. Also the boiler regs in UK only allow for copper or steel in construction (Southern Fed) so you aren't likely to get it passed an inspector.

I'd much rather be near a ductile boiler than a brittle one!

I like the idea that a copper-nickel alloy hull can have a "payback period as short as 32 years" - that's long-term financial planning!

I wouldnt want to experience either. I once made a simple boiler out of exceptionally thin copper just to see if it would hold out, it did but it got thrown in the scrap bin anyway.

I cant comment on the above.

I had a short length of 'copper alloy' ex RN tube given to me many years ago. Aparently used on very high pressure steam lines.

I cut it up for various things including a number of displacement lubricator tanks for hydrostatic sight feed type displacement steam oil lubricators on locos all tested to working pressure of the loco. I have not the slightest doubt it was the copper nickel alloy referred to above. It silver soldered beautifully.

Cheers,

Julian

If it is any help, the Australian code allows cupro-nickel alloys 400 Monel and R405 Monel.

Thanks for the advice, I hadn't considered it might not be approved for use.
