Choosing a DRO is Easson any good?

Hi,

I am thinking of getting a dro and was wondering if anyone has experience of the Easson ES8A or the Sino type displays.

I have heard the Easson has easy push buttons but have not seen one to touch and dont know what the overall reliability would be like on a Easson ES8A so if anyone has any advice good or bad I would be glad to hear it.

Hi Richard,

I installed an ES8 system on a RF45 Mill Drill (I think that's the model number, anyway it's the G/H one with the dovetail vertical column) about 10 - 12 years ago. Absolutely no trouble, and I was very happy with it. Pity about the RF45, the quill / feed is total crap and I pushed it into a corner as soon as I found my second-hand B/P. I took the Y-axis scale off the RF45 and grafted it onto the cross-slide of my 13x40 lathe (together with the display) where it continues to perform flawlessly. It 'only' has 5 micron resolution, which is a bit of a pain sometimes, maybe the newer models do better. But from a reliability POV I can't fault it.

I have an Eason ES14 readout on my SX3 mill and would recommend it.

When I bought it the 1um glass scales were on special and cheaper than the 5um scales. (5um are all you really need for milling. !um are more suited to surface grinder accuracy). You cam mix the scale resolution. eg. 1um on the X and Y axis and 5um on the Z-axis.

The readout has lots of features. (finding the mid point of 2 edges, PCD hole centres, Inclined holes or edges. milling a fillet edge in all planes). Lots of videos on Youtube by DRO Pros

I had an Easson two axis which came fitted to my lathe. It failed after about 7 years. Naturally, the board was no longer available. I eventually coughed up the money for a new one, about $A 600 I think, after fuming for a year or so first. The new one is an ugly grey colour instead of the nice black old one. It plugged straight into the scales though, thankfully.

I have had 2 Easson ES-12 DRO's for about 18 months that so far have given good service (as expected) but are very easy and intuitive to use.

I purchased them from a retailer that advertises on this site and the speed of delivery was excellent. (arrived next day) They also have produced their own instructions in a nicely bound book which make life simpler than a chinglese interpretation of our mother tongue.

Thanks for the replies, I looked at the SDS6 display online and the only reason I asked about reliability is that it says the SDS6 has an internal replaceable power supply in case of failure? which I suppose is good but how often do they keep going whereas the easson does not mention anything so guess nothing is replaceable and seems more people have easson than SDS6 from the replies so far

At the moment I am leaning towards the easson ES8, I was wondering about using the self adhesive magnetic tape scale as it says you can mount it directly to a machined surface that should be great on a crosslide.

Has anyone ever thought of a 3 axis dro for a lathe ie 3rd used on the tailstock just a thought might be good for accurate drilling!

Also forgot to mention to Nick _G I was talking to a rep we had at work and he said he had an Easson ES12 LCD dro and he said it was great but had to send it back as he purchased it to provide a feed rate display but apparently there was a cock up at the factory as all were shipped and never got programed in the software for feedrate display so he returned it but am guessing this has been solved now.
