I would like to make a copy of the fuel pipe shown in the picture. Model pipe size would be 5/16" diameter.

As you can see, the bends are very sharp and I doubt that two 90 degree bends could be made so tightly. At least, I doubt my ability in this matter.

The only way I can think of is to get 2 cast elbows (PMResearch style), silver solder them together and grind off the lips. So would the 'experts' tackle this in another way?

Make 2 open halves and solder them together, the solder line would look like the parting line of the casting in your photo. Do the end threads after soldered assy. Or both ends could be made with integral bolting flanges - no threads at all. Even better! Just my $0.02. JD

Short radius elbows are available but probably not in the small size that you need but you could make one from a fitting similar to this and shape the square shape to look more like the one which you need. Then silver solder 2 of them together.

Paul.

Hi Dave,

Quite tricky!

I would make it out of a slab of brass. Profile the outside. You will need sharper bends as per Paul above. Drill the passageways. One will need plugging with a silver soldered plug, the vertical passageway. A dremel with dental burrs can be used to get rid of the internal sharp corners.

Good luck!

Cheers,

Julian

If you have suitable pipe you could fill it with solder then bend it. Heat to remove the solder after bending.

Hi Martin,

You wont bend those sharp bends without getting up to annealing heat and bending whilst hot. That rules out Woods metal or soft solder etc.

Cheers,

Julian

Dave, get yourself a couple of 8mm compression fittings and machine off the threads, leave a small spigot on one end and a matching recess on the other to help locate them while silver soldering. Add any bits to the ends as needed.

This is one that has been modified

Some of the other parts

Soldered up in the foreground

Another option is a piecing saw and stick of solder, saw a series of holes that go almost all the way through then you can bend the now flexible pipe and solder back up which fills the saw slots. Not sure if you can see all the slots in thsi exhaust pipe

Last option put the job out to a man who canwink 2

Just remembered I sketched something out for Andrew J.

I have used this method a few times, pic is the basic joint, you would use 3 pieces

elbow.jpg

You then just machine/hand finish the stubs on the ends so they blend in, like this water lifter elbow

Or this clack

Thanks for the various suggestions, gents. I like JB's sketch suggestion (simplest for me!). I can't see his photographs.

Apologies for late reply, but I've been unable to access the internet for a while.
