![]() 1860 forum posts 121 photos | Mine is the earlier 3 gear screwcutting gearbox. Ive got the drive gears as slow ratio as possible but it is still way too fast for anything other than screw cutting. Is there any other way of slowing it so I can use it for normal turning operations? |

851 forum posts 206 photos | I have the L5A with a gearbox, but as far as I know the three speed translation box works on the same principle. There should be two shafts running along the bed just behind the apron the upper one is the normal leadscrew, and the lower one is a plain keyed shaft which provides the fine feed. 17 forum posts 3 photos | There is another knob below and to the right of the cross-slide handle that changes over from cross-sliding to surfacing. I can't remember whether it a push, pull or turn type of knob. |

3630 forum posts 128 photos | Fizzy The knob Hairy Pete refers to is a push-pull device partially obscured by the cross slide hand wheel. Can't recall if its push in for longitudinal feed or pull out as its approaching 3 decades since I drove an L series for real. Easily overlooked, especially if you have Euro Safety Neurosis full circle hand wheels. I've never met one that was less than stiff to operate. On a neglected machine they can be almost impossible to move. Best to wipe hands and knob of any oil before attempting to pull out. If your fingers slip off a right painful rap on the cross slide hand wheel is almost certain. Stiff apron controls are almost a given with an older Harrison, especially if its not been in constant use so a day or two devoted to strip clean, re-lube and careful adjustment, where necessary, of apron and slides is well worth it. Many folk stepping up from Model Engineer size bench top machines to ex industrial or training shop ones expect the bigger machine to be rather heavier to operate and un-necessarily accept as inherent characteristics that are due to lubrication faults and general neglect. ![]() 337 forum posts 107 photos | Push it in for longitudinal feed. its a good idea to disengage the dog clutch on the lead screw (left hand end ) if your not screw cutting. HTH

![]() 1860 forum posts 121 photos | I thought the push pull know was just for the cross feed direction. Good news is that when I did mess with it it was easy to move. Will check tonight to see if it will change to surfacing.
