Sieg sc3

Again guys, thanks. Very helpful. I did look at the SC4 and would love it, but would find it hard to justify the price to myself, let alone my better half. Lol.

Ketan you, and indeed the guys on this site are a mine of information for which i am very grateful. Fettling and adaptation would be part of the fun i think. Most of what i would be machining would be nylon 6, brass and occasionally stainless steel which i know will present its own issues to a small hobby lathe, but who wants an easy life.

As for a category, i would be a "d", but with a tendancy to fix it myself.

I'm a newbie just researching what to buy for my first lathe...part of my research showed the sieg sc2 and sc3 to be interesting from arc euro...then I stumbled across this thread and wow...big thanks to Ketan and the others for their comments above...they're a big help...

As for the sc4 that looks a beaut so might have to raid the piggy bank and eat beans for a few weeks...

The SC4 looks to be a much more capable machine. I have no experience of them apart from twiddling the knobs and wheels at ARC.

I too was seriously tempted by the sc4, but went for the SC3 instead and have to say I am seriously impressed by it. Having machined a variety of materials from Delrin to stainless steel, including screwcutting I have found it to be a very competent small lathe. It holds a size well, cuts parallel and the markings on the handwheels are accurate enough to rely on. Being a professional machinist I have found the machine enjoyable to use and it can produce very accurate work.

As for Ketan and Arc Euro they are extremely knowledgeable about the products they supply and are there to help. My experience of both the lathe and the company have been first class and I would not hesitate to recommend both the machine and the company to anyone.

You know you want it, jump in with the reassurance of excellent backup and support. Oh and delivery was surprisingly quick too.

Just got to decide sc2 or 3...or overtime at work and sc4...decisions decisions...

If anyone is considering buying a machine from direct overseas (Being parochial, outside UK ) my advice is don't.

If there is a problem, you may get little or no back up or help.

My experience of three UK suppliers of machines, varies between superb to poor.

As Ketan's previous posts show, he sums up the various types of customer pretty accurately.

My dealings with ARC have only been of small value orders, never bought a machine, but the service has always been excellent. My S3 mini lathe originally came from a supplier, whose back up I class as poor. Ketan happily provided, as he always does, good advice, on a machine that he did not sell. So, there was not likely to be much in it for him, but nevertheless he was prepared to help.

Even reputable suppliers occasionally provide "Friday Afternoon" machines. How they respond sorts out the men from the boys.

I know of more than one case where a faulty machine has been replaced without argument, to ensure that the customer is satisfied with their purchase.

Those who support their customers and others in the hobby, deserve support, and they will reciprocate.
