This is a stereo pair [Stereoscopic, not Stereophonic] The tip of a commercially manufactured wooden ‘gramophone needle’ ... i.e. not a natural thorn I wonder what is the "point" of the asymmetrical tip? Did the needle have to be installed in a particular axial orientation? . Forgive me for re-using your pun, but ... I don't think there is any point ... the asymmetry appears to be accidental ... There are certainly no instructions provided regarding orientation. MichaelG. . More anon |

I remember hearing that thorns could be used in lieu of needles; can anyone confirm? We still had some in about 1960, and a device for sharpening them. Dad said that they were made of hawthorn, though whether it was the actual thorn or turned from the wood of the stem I have no idea. George B. . Very likely to be the actual thorn, I would say: We have Hawthorn trees in the field behind the house, and some of the thorns are impressive to say the least [and they do make very good material for crafting miniature items] I suspect [but have yet to find any proof] that thorns were harvested, and used for their special properties. MichaelG. . Edit: I have just looked at the [His Master's Voice] packet, and I see that the needles are described as thorn Edited By Michael Gilligan on 08/04/2020 12:57:28 |

Thanks for your reply above re the tip; I speculated that the shape might be a response to the difference between the inside and outside of the recording groove. |

1186 forum posts 11 photos | Well done TomK. Now wouldn't it be good if we had a search that actually worked on this forum? Perhaps Neil could record that message and play it a few times to his bosses. It would be well worth the 2/6. |

![]() 204 forum posts 37 photos | Before 1921, sterling silver, 1921 to 1947, some silver but I don't remember the proportion. I just mention it for information, I don't advise defacing the coinage!!! Best Regards, Swarf, Mostly! Thankyuo SM for that information - very useful. They were collected by my father and somewhere I have the list he made with all the dates of the collection. I will have a look and see if there is anything valuable. Peter |
