Re. dro's... I use a couple of digi tyre depth gauges on my lathe, one on the tail stock & one on the cross slide both fixed by 5mm neodymium magnets glued on to the under side,& 3mm ones glued on to the end of the probes, small but very strong grip & both work spot on for me. If I'm not using the tailstock one I use that for the saddle longitudinal travel, never had an error, other than of my making...

I've taken the stops off the slides end & I can get up to 37mm travel which is fine for the final finishing to length / up to shoulder / final dia. I did make one out of a 150mm digi vernier & that worked ok but wasn't happy with the faff on locking it every time but could get 135 mm reading with that...

Whilst I was in the man cave today I did a check on the tyre gauge digi read out travel on the saddle travel position, can get 50mm safely before scale comes out of read head... sufficient travel for finishing off with just a 'tad more', & when you're done just unclip it & store it back on the tail stock, or wherever...

Hi George,

How are these gauges attached to the machine and where can they be bought?

Many thanks,

Ian

Can't edit my previous post but I have re-read that you use magnets glued to the scale, so if you can offer advice on where to buy these type of scales.

Thanks,

Ian

Thats really quite ingenious. I dont fancy a full DRO setup on the lathe at this time, but those might just be a nice compromise.

Bought off eBay... cut the lugs off, super glue / epoxy 4-6 neodymium magnets onto back... voila! ... usual disclaimer applies.

If you don't fancy modding a digital caliper, (They really are HARD steel) you can buy DROs with horizontal scales for tailstocks, saddles etc, or vertical for Z axis on vertical mills)

My Tailstock DRO now won't switch off, (Battery removed for the present, dared not say "currently" ) so the next job on the Round Tuit is to remove, strip and clean the circuit board, and hope that it will be cured.

Thank you George, very helpful links and very cheap gauges. Will give it a go.

Thanks, Ian
