I'm willing to bet you will see from the wear pattern that the upper half has a bright shiny patch where it was contantly hard up against the spindle being unable to float slightly as the design intended. Anoither bonus might be marginally easier movement and control of the spindle. Regards Brian |

2032 forum posts 41 photos | Btw..you seem triumphant that there was no anti rotation key.. . It was just a suggestion that these are sometimes used so check that this isn't the case. |

194 forum posts 17 photos | No , I wasn't triumphant ( because I was clueless about such devices anyway ) , only mentioned it Because there had been some speculation. It's good to know these things because my last experience of anything cotter was getting the pedals off my bike when I was about 8, - I remember mangling them and thinking 'I haven't done that very well ... Just wrestling with how to take a few thou off the diameter whist maintaining a nice finish ( apart from the file stroke which I also don't know how to do. Looks tricky to hold on the lathe without marring the surface. |

. It might be easier to clean the hole out very thoroughly, and then if-needs-be, open it out a touch with emery paper on a wooden dowel. MichaelG. |

2032 forum posts 41 photos | The file stroke thing.... Just a single stroke to add an air bleed to cotter if it fits "too" well in the blind hole..you will know if too good ..when cotter feels "springy" in the blind hole. . A stroke. .smallest cut ..to provide a simple flat..air..leak..letting air in. |
