Bronze block is available but again easier to come by round. Machine the sliding face and then soft solder to something that you can hold in the vice, mill the recess, melt the solder and rub on some wet n dry to remove solder.

![]() 7468 forum posts 230 photos | If at some time you need a steel on steel bearing, one component should be hardened/case hardened, by doing this the two parts are in a different state, remember that in most cases you should not run two surfaces of like metal together as a bearing, the exception is cast iron. The slippers could be made of cast iron. Ian S C |

61 forum posts | Hi I have been looking into fitting slipper, I can just about fit them with some adjustment, but critically what Is the minimum thickness that I can get away with? As there's very little metal to mill out of crosshead mark |

![]() 25215 forum posts 3105 photos 1 articles | you could probably go down to 1/32" so 0.75mm or rather than make loose ones they could be soft soldered onto the cross head and then machined down to maybe half that.

![]() 7468 forum posts 230 photos | It would be possible to use bronze shim stock, if you can find someone who will supply small amounts. I used it to "bush" the yoke on a Scotch Yoke drive for the displacer of one of my hot air engines, the yoke was aluminium, and the crank pin mild steel. Ian S C |

61 forum posts | Hi Ian yea iv thought about that just I'd have to find away of mounting that on crosshead I think the recess way is the way Togo, don't fancy soldering a thin plate, would be afraid it would fall out! And this3" scale Burrell would likely do that I guess! |

![]() 7468 forum posts 230 photos | Mark, a pair of little slippers could be made, a little turn up at each end, maybe reinforced with a short piece of wire soldered to the turn up. Shim bronze is available down to .005", it's usually springy. Ian S C |
