Thread: A milling machine problem
17/02/2017 08:44:06

I would have thought that the inverter is going to run at near maximum load most of the time. I was always taught to spec equipment 25% higher than the maximum running draw. That way machinery will never be running flat out. Also maximum and minimum power outputs are normally measured under ideal conditions.

Thread: Slant gears?
16/02/2017 22:27:06

I will post some pictures tomorrow. They are cut in a straight angle ( I have clocked them to confirm this) rather than a helix and they alternate lefthand - righthand so that they mesh. But because of the angle they have thrust washers on all the gears.

Lego are the biggest tyre manufacturers in the world.

Thread: Slant gears?
16/02/2017 22:05:59

I am rebuilding a 1914 petrol engine that has twin cams. One of the timing gears is missing. I need to make a replacement, I have measured them and they appear to be cut at an angle of 14 1/2 degrees but are straight not helical.

I assume I can cut the gear the same as straight spur gear but at the correct angle.

Anyone has come across this type of gear before?

Thread: Local mirror silvering services ?
15/02/2017 08:26:57

Amazon sell an unbelievable number of dangerous chemicals and they will post them. If you know the right components you can even buy them to make your own batch of nitro-glycerin!

I used to send mine off to be aluminised and overcoated. Can't remember where now but I presume such firms still exist?

I did silver a 12" mirror myself once which wasn't particularly difficult. The problem nowadays would be getting hold of the chemicals - IIRC silver nitrate, concentrated nitric acid (for cleaning the glass), ammonia, sodium hydroxide, and dextrose. I got my chemicals from the local chemist but those days have long gone unfortunately.

Silvering can be a bit nerve racking as you can get silver fulminate formed during the process if you don't mix the chemicals properly!

Thread: Araldite to seal a tender tank
11/02/2017 18:29:01

When I have soldered tanks including petrol tanks, I seal them and use a pump to gain a bit of negative pressure in the tank so that the solder gets sucks into the joint.

Thread: Gear cutting with a shaper?
11/02/2017 18:25:56

Yes no problem. The hardest bit is grinding the form tool. Using a rotary table or dividing head won't present any problems as long as you have a bit of clearance after the tool clears the job.

Thread: Question on chucks & a warning on lathe safety.
09/02/2017 20:11:25

With regard to the lathe accident I was always taught to always put a centre in, if the amount sticking out exceeds the amount being held. Even when you are facing the material!

Thread: Converting German metal grades to UK
08/02/2017 21:29:48

I was led to understand that EN stood for Emergency Number issued by the Government in the last war due to steel makers had all their own grades.

Why not use a 22mm bullnose cutter?

Thread: Fireproof Overalls
04/02/2017 19:47:07

Drag racers race suits are similar to donkey jacket material, I assume this is for insulation in case of fire!

03/02/2017 23:31:31

A heavy leather apron will protect you against red hot steel for about 30 seconds. Proban overalls will last about 3 seconds if your lucky. Most Proban overalls have a fire rating to stop catching fire rather than protect you from burning yourself.

A Proban Formula 1 race suit is rated at 60 seconds and a standard MSA suit is rated at 10 seconds! The theory is it gives you enough protection to get out of the car and run!

The problem is what ever you wear might stop you burning but it could help cook you!

Thread: Spline cutters
03/02/2017 23:17:11

I need to cut a SAE 10 spline and I need to find a supplier of spline form cutters. Anyone know a supplier in the UK?

Thread: How to make barley-sugar brass tubes

When making wrought iron twists for gates and railings, you should twist the left hand ones one way and the right hand one the other way. This way they look much nicer and is the traditional way.

Thread: Singer sewing machine motor.

Anyone know what speed Singer motors run at flat out? I was thinking of using one for a toolpost grinder?

Thread: Plans for a small bore spiral pipe bender
27/01/2017 20:08:28

`Like a coil spring. On large sizes I use a powered pipe roller but I need to some in 1/4" copper.

27/01/2017 19:50:00

Anybody know where I can get a set of drawings for a small bore spiral pipe bender?
