Thread: Engineers stud or just studding

1-1/2x1/4 bsf set screw then cut the head of ?

Do Myford list these as a replacement part ? They may have been made speacial order for Myford with long threads on each end .

If you buy longer high tensile studs and try to cut longer threads it can be difficult and usually the thread comes out rough as they are heat treated after the thread is cut .

Are they high tensile to start with ?

Ian a photo of what you are trying to fix would help

XD.

Thread: Metal storage options

So some progress today :

Steel puchased after i made a simple sketch of what i wanted and then some work for the bandsaw .

The general idea is the large heavy ingots or barstock will be stored in a drawer on rollers under the bench , offcuts of tube, angle and flatbar will be stored on the larger shelf .

The top narrow shelf is where 6 drawers will hold my various small offcuts of round, hex square etc ,i picked up some long plastic parts drawers off ebay they are 600 long x200 wide x 100 high and have 5 removable dividers .

On top will be the drill press , bench grinder and this one will have a back board and some shelves for my drill bits , clamps and spare wheels for the grinder .

Thread: Ideas on how to repair a cast iron T slot
03/08/2017 14:24:23

How thick is the material in the base of the t slot ?

What is the slot between the two sections for ?

Plans are underway ,

New drill press bench , reorganization of workbench , welding trolleys and more - nothing special but maybe useful to others .

Will post photos as a i go .

You can break most things up :

Global variables ,setup and your loop .

So i think Brian has hit the nail on the head for beginners , work on a section at a time on paper then once you're happy punch it into the IDE and see if it compiles .

I would plunge a 3/8 slot drill in then machine up a threaded plug and braze it in place that way you get back to the original thread size that i'm guessing was 5/16 ?

3.5 mm seems shallow and i would not like to try cutting that thread !

A photo would be helpful.

Thread: What sort of parallels are these?

Nige , don't worry about how many post you make ( or cranky moderators cheeky) there is no limit and it sure beats reading another " what lathe to buy " post i can tell you !

We used to have a prolific poster - Wolfie and it was like a dialy dose of your favourite tv show , you would tune in just to see what he was up to !

Unfortunately he has not been heard from for a while .

I can see.what Neil is saying but you are probably going through boxes of stuff and going wow what is this and everything is a new discovery .

keep asking questions !

The holes an recess are possibly there so you can bolt them to an angle plate,or down on a mill table as a fence

Thread: Propane Cylinder worse when empty?

I would rather a kero unit than lpg , i have heard of some three way fridges exploding usually when on gas .

Ian.

Over the years I've had four and they have never done that or maybe I wear them out sooner.

Martin P

There were a few that i know of that caught fire and two that exploded , may have been a fault or the owner not following the instructions but turned me off i can tell you !

I just want to add something for anyone who comes along looking for arduino info , one of the books that i used is arduino workshop - a good starting point but not sure if available in all countries .

One of the best things about arduino is if you have a pc , an internet connection and a few dollars you are in business !

One of the things Paul Mcworter keeps harping on about is keeping your sketch neat and tidy , if you look around on youtube or the internet you will find many sketches are difficult to read many don't work or won't compile and if your lucky the IDE will tell you whats wrong .

I can tell when my the bottle on webber bbq is getting close to empty as it takes longer to heat up and doesn't get as hot and i remember the gas hot water in a van i was living in was the same .

Possibly like a boiler , a full boiler has its water at boiling point ready to convert to steam but the less water in that boiler the less steam it could produce at any one time . Also tak e a look at your regulator they don't last forever and i have had a few fail or play up .

Door seals on those fridges are really critical also .

There is the other option - hope they sell to investors and they want to keep you as a tenant , you should have a talk to the owner and agent that is selling the premises .

I have just been through this after a year of thinking the old owner was going to take half my yard for a granny flat , he thougth it was a matter that of just pull the garage down and take half the driveway off me but once i showed him my workshop and boat it soon became apparent if the garage goes so do i so he sold the house .

I'm hoping the new owner buggers off and leaves me alone , for the moment it seems he will although the real estate agent tried to whack the rent up which is typical - didn't happen though !

Try Paul Mcworter on youtube or his website toptechboy.com

The only bad thing with that tutorial he made is he had an allergy so you have to put up with him coughing which can be a little irritating but if you can put up with it the tutorial series is well worth watching .

I would also check out the arduino website as it has loads of useful info as well.

The ones on my lathe came out by turning upside down and giving it a couple of wraps with a plastic hammer , there may be a small burr stopping it coming out ?

Another option is to leave it there bit glue it down in the hole with loctite or the like .

So you apply it to one surface and dampen the other then stick them together ?

Sounds similar to Gorilla grip glue .

Wow!

Lots of good ideas there !

I am slowly building a mental picture of what i want , the filing drawer i have broke because i stuffed to much in it but it is repairable it needs the slides replacing with heavy duty units but i wish i had one like Riks !

I was looking at a server cabinet a few weeks back at job site i visit , i was pondering what use one could be in my workshop and i was considering one for tool storage but didn't like all the ventilation holes as it would allow moisture and dust in - never thought of materials storage though and they areheavy duty cabinets !

I currently have my alloy angle , flat bar , tubing etc standing up between the wall studs which is ok for longer lengths (300mm+ ) but need a place for offcuts , my workshop is just an old fibro garage of 60s vintage with no ceiling , Ricks ceiling hooks has me thinking of making a hanging tray or shelf that hooks up over and spans between two rafters that i can keep my intermediate llengths of angle , flat amd tubing , this will free up some space !

I would like to thank all of you for your replies and for taking the time to do so and to any future replies also .

Neil now we know the truth as to how your car broke down , you were carting all of your heavy plate over to Ricks house so he can improve the handling of his capri 😄

Off to the shed now armed with a cuppa for a long hard think about about this !

Could be wrong but what they called armour plater was just soft wrought iron.

They must have had something harder as a drill bit so must have understood hardening .

There is a down side to just about anything John but it is always helpful to have people with your experience here to guide the less experienced through these processes .

I had a gunsmith that did a lot of work on my rifles and he did his own blueing , he admitted that it,was slowly killing him .

Neil ,

I suspect you are talking about high helix cutters that some will not be aware of or experienced with - Now there is an article for MEW to discuss in the magazine in there somewhere !
