Thread: Boring - best practice? |
20/08/2023 09:44:09 |
Ady system Biggest drill possible to start Heavy inaccurate lower speed hogging to 98% Finish boring with sharp fine feed cutting to 100%, high speed seems to help too ------ I also did a big 45mm hole in 12mm steel plate by putting the boring bar in the chuck and whirring it through with the job mounted on the saddle. It made a damn nice job of it with the swarf floating off as it went through I've never done a full bore with the tool revolving between headstock/tailstock and the job feeding through but with a nicely ground tooltip it's definitely got good potential for a hobbyist edit: I always use hss for boring because it's nice and sharp Edited By Ady1 on 20/08/2023 10:00:52 |

Keep digging downwards and you can start looking at geothermal power I believe it gets pretty toasty once you're down a few miles |

It always amazes me the diversity of useful minerals under the tiny island of Britain In global terms Japan only got about 1 bucket of coal |

That mini oxy-acetylene type furnace at 28.00 was something else Insta steel for dropping into a mould |

The ones that make me grit my teeth are the old WW2 films and documentaries with an operators nose 12 inches from a lathe or milling job and nobody is wearing safety glasses |
19/08/2023 09:46:05 |
Youtube has loads of videos of overseas fitters and machinists all doing their thing in safety flip flops The job was always a risk taker type pursuit. My Uncle who left the yards is still fine, all his yard mates are dead, his brother who stayed in the yards is dead. All Billy Connolys yard mates are dead, legalised smoking covered up an industrial killing fields scenario in the UK It's a tuff old world and it hasn't changed, it's only been outsourced Edited By Ady1 on 19/08/2023 09:59:57 |

I always use my brushless DC battery drills when hand drilling steel to 12mm My poor 240v drills would start to smell if they were made to do any proper drill work |

There used to be a load of fabulous stuff in the Chambers Street museum in Scotland Goodness knows what they've done with it all We're talking jaw dropper stuff that worked when you pushed a button. All gone. Edited By Ady1 on 18/08/2023 10:45:16 |

I tend to look for brushless if I'm choosing It's like electronic ignition for cars in the 1980s, it's just better |

Some of your bits look like a south bend, which on the balance of probabilities you've got more chance of running into randomly Edited By Ady1 on 17/08/2023 20:22:15 |

I think it may get even worse I had a non receipt which got refunded a month or two ago when suddenly they emailed saying I'd received it and "give us our money" bla bla bla Anyway there was a couple of he-said she-said emails before I got the last one signed from chatbotsooo It looks like AI chatbots are going to be used by companies for auto annoying people over various issues |

The standard Drummond ones were rubbish so I fabricated my own If you can do basic welding it makes these kind of tasks a lot easier, the original was ridiculously limited in its capacity and I made a far more useful version The only caveat I would add is the finger tips should be phosphor bronze or suchlike bearing material to make life easier, the rest of the design is up to you Edited By Ady1 on 16/08/2023 13:26:34 |
Thread: Casting an odd cylinder |
16/08/2023 13:10:14 |
Great work Drew from salvage hunters was at the bo'ness iron foundry last night. They have 10s of thousands of casting moulds going back to the 19th century, gawd knows how they organise them all but they are all very accurate, take ages to make, and need to be kept undamaged when not in use Edited By Ady1 on 16/08/2023 13:13:10 |

An old thread here when you only need a permanent reversal The motor wires need to be swapped over, not the supply, so it needs to be wired up to do that Edited By Ady1 on 14/08/2023 22:55:52 |

It looks like the worn teeth are sacrificial It also looks like you could file them down slightly to improve engagement I would buy a spare part anyway, if the lathe was my long term pal Is this your manual? Edited By Ady1 on 13/08/2023 19:57:07 Edited By Ady1 on 13/08/2023 19:59:59 |
Thread: Gear head vs variable speed lathe |
13/08/2023 19:08:04 |
The big difference is if you work it hard or have a really tough job Backgear can do it all day and your motor is hot as heck when you finish and It can do it again tomorrow, and the day after... It's just more reliable and you can fix it if it breaks, even I could get the small cog on mine fixed eventually VFD stuff is great, only an eejit couldn't see that, but if you work it too hard things will happen that you can't fix This is my Drummond on backgear stripping 8 inches of rebar in a single pass, I simply put it on a slow feed and it gouged out about 10mm with a knife cut
