Thread: What would you ban and why? (Definitely tearoom!) |
21/08/2016 20:12:35 |
I want to impose a ten thousand pine fine for any cyclists riding two abreast on the public higfhway and a twent thousand pound fine for horse riders doing the same. They might currently have the right to do so (sadly both do) but that doesnt mean thats its a safe thing to do. |
Thread: What Did You Do Today (2016) |
20/08/2016 19:40:16 |
Steam tested and certified my new 7 1/4 Invicta (well, it bears a resemblence from 30 feet away). 4 years in the makinf inbetween having our lovely daughter and im well chuffed (no pun intended) with both! |
Thread: axlebox clearances |
20/08/2016 18:42:00 |
Some people make them a near perfect fit, which is all well and good if you are capable of machining and aligning everyting perfectly first. Any inacuracy anywhere will result in the axle binding badly and the linkages will most likely bind as well. For this reason I opt for what most would describe as a sloppy fit although in reality it is only a few thou. It all depends on what you want from your loco - for display it wont matter but if you are planning running for 200 hours a year for the next twenty years it becomes a little bit more critical. |
Thread: Torque required for a small mill power feed |

how about this on a well known auction site 12v 24v High Torque Worm Motor Geared Motor DC motor Robot GW31ZY

Thread: Power Feed For My SX3 Mill |

That unit looks nice but at £250 its a luxury I cant afford! |
Thread: Torque required for a small mill power feed |
18/08/2016 19:34:41 |
So as a starting point a torque of 20kg/cm should work with a direct gearbox to feedscrew axis join? I dont take big cuts ! |
18/08/2016 15:58:19 |
I don't have a spring balance (I do remember them from school) so how do I use tape? Thanks. Im also assuming that the torque required needs to be measured at the crank as it will be a direct attachment rather than from the handwheel? Im confused. |
18/08/2016 15:04:53 |
I am looking to add a very basic powerfeed to my X2 mill X axis. The table is a bit small to be adding a wiper motor. There are lots of smaller geared motors out there but I have no idea of the expected torque requirement. Anyone have any ideas? |
Thread: Knurling |
18/08/2016 12:59:09 |
I was taught to knurl in back gear - slow, but I recently watched a u-tube clip of a chap knurling at maybe 300rpm so I thought id give it a try. Blow me if I didn't get an excellent result in about 3 seconds! |
Thread: Have a look at FORMcard |

Thread: Whats the least expensive 7 1/4 build? |
17/08/2016 20:53:44 |
Julian, that 1366 is spot on, just a shame the wheels would cost £300. Im definately tempted though. Thanks |

Ive got a complete set of drawings and castings for 5" Speedy but It just doesnt do it for me, so I apreciate the part about building something you want to build. My passion would be a GWR 1100 040 tank in 71/4 gauge. Im not into scale replicas so no problems with a few adoptations and fabrications, id just like to build to a proven design safe in the knowledge that I wont have to remake most of the parts further down the line. Do drawings exist for such an item (or a 71/4 Pansy, although I like the simplicity of 040)? |

Now that my 7 1/4 Invicta is complete I would like to make something using plans and castings (instead of my own drawings and solid). Who offers the cheapest build casting set? |
Thread: Kunifer boilers |
11/08/2016 18:52:32 |
I wouldnt want to experience either. I once made a simple boiler out of exceptionally thin copper just to see if it would hold out, it did but it got thrown in the scrap bin anyway. |
11/08/2016 12:24:23 |
Im only guessing here(its been 30 years since I last sat in a metallurgy class) but nickel is added to the copper to make it more ductile, and a ductile boiler isn't something I want to be near. Also the boiler regs in UK only allow for copper or steel in construction (Southern Fed) so you aren't likely to get it passed an inspector. |
Thread: Pallet Jack/Pump Truck |
11/08/2016 12:17:51 |
This will be of no help what so ever to Grant but when I was Quality Manager for Linde fork lift trucks we discovered we had hundreds of these in a warehouse which was destined for other things....so we hired a bloke with an oxy torch to put a hole though them and throw them in a skips. Now that's innovation for you! |

Let me lighten the tone with a couple of recent apprentice related tales...On instructing a science lab apprentice to record a GC level figure of 1600 she enquired "is that the same as a one with six hundred written behind it", Same person "If a man mated with a dog would it come out half man, half dog, and which would be at which end?". I can honestly say that the person in question is probably the best weve got and is a real asset to the company, but I question what on earth kids do at school these days! |

Thread: Might be time to change the car blues |

Im a bit confused - you say that the broken springs were replaced by OEM springs, so they should be spot on? |
