Thread: Made in China, Screw Thread |
18/03/2017 21:31:50 |
thanks - had no idea there were so many, its an internal thread so any idea how to determine it without buying every tap? |
18/03/2017 21:05:07 |
Not a thread about things made in china but about a thread size on an item made in China. Its a fine pitch thread OD 6mm but it doesnt match any gauges I have. Do they have a 'standard' fine thread over in that China? |

Years ago I was using a 4.5" grinding disk in the angle grinder a bit too aggressively when it shattered completely. The fragments mostly hit me in the chest and I was wearing several layers but it was one hell of a thud. If it had been my face it would have been a very sorry story. Do I wear face PPE now - yes. I even bought full face shields! |

I had one break on the weld recently, I enquired with the seller as what I might do to avoid this, he replied that if it breaks on the weld then it is faulty and gave me a new one for free - nice chap. |

Thread: Acid pickling brass |

If I put brass items in the pickle they come out feignt copper colour - is this copper left behind after removing the surface layer or is it being picked up somehow from the solution (which gest used a lot to pickle copper boilers)
your thoughts please |
Thread: Silver Soldering Long Sections |
02/03/2017 08:47:51 |
Hi Keith - good to chat with you at the show in Oldham, I even managed to sell one of my delux boilers there so a success for me. I have used TIG as a heat source for silver soldering copper and its not a great process. The heat is too localised and you cant see what you are doing with the rod. Ive also welded brass to steel with the tig, you get a good result but even with the right rod I found the joints to be quite brittle. If it were my job id be inclined as others have indicated and soft solder it. Best of luck Richard. |

I went saturday afternoon and the parking was terrible. We drove round the carpark for ages, along with many others but no spaces came, we ended up having to park a fifteen minute walk away. |
Thread: Tank restoration |
19/02/2017 21:45:33 |
Unfortunately filling with water is not a sure fire way of being safe, as you heat it any gas vapour eluded inside the tank will rise to the highest part, if that happens to be the open filler all well and good but otherwise it will pocket and be more likely to go bang than if there were no water in at all. We used to repair ali tanks from racing cars, they had to be steam cleaned for something like 30 minutes non stop before we were allowed near them. I used to blow compressed air through them when I did my own to disperse any unwanted gas, no science behind it but nothing ever went bad (I am not advising this, just saying). Akin to putting the car exhaust pipe in possibly. |
Thread: Hi From NW UK |

I do live here! Have done all my life. Rain, wind, cold...great if you like that sort of weather. Stunning views over pendle hill from my living room window, if the fog ever clears long enough. |

Thread: Quality digital vernier calipers |

My mid range set are Sealey - I use the cheapo ones as well. Given the variability in results (once did a very boring gauge R&R on it) there seems no benefit accuracy wise in buying expensive. |
Thread: Araldite to seal a tender tank |
11/02/2017 21:56:42 |
This is what I did last time - and it works perfect. Make sure any intended holes are either accessible or bunged up with something covered in grease, then mix a cup of fibreglass resin and pour into the warmed tank. When warmed it goes very runny so gets into the leaky bits. Swirl it round up the sides etc then pull out the bung and let any excess run off. Cheap and completely effective, tried and tested! |
Thread: Why is the lift so small on water pump ball valves? |
06/02/2017 19:35:55 |
Ive never made or seen a funnel shaped seat - I would imagine the ball would sooner or later get stuck in it! I only ever make perpendicular seats, or flat to you and me. I tried the volcano conical type but any minute off centre turning means it doesnt seat. I used to swear by nitrile balls until one got sucked in! |
Thread: accurate measurement of steam temperature |
06/02/2017 19:31:26 |
pressure is set to blow off at 60psi which from memory would be around 120 deg c. I just neet to see if the steam leaving the superheater is hotter than that going in. It is open i.e. not connected to any pistons at the moment.

thanks all - i had thought of just blasting steam at a digital thermometer, would this work? |
