hi to you both yeah it was the tich just a rod, i was going back and forth hardly any movement but it grabbed on the wind out. and if i was to scrap it (i was seriously considering it) i would of had to remake a few parts and fourtunly then it was a carbon steel tap im glad i got it out so is the wife because im very inpatient normally but last night must off been a good day many thanks to you both for your replys |

just broke a 7ba tap in a 3/16'' piece of stainless steel tried knocking it round nope dried knocking it thru nope in the end i heated it to bright cheery red and broke it out with a carbide scriber then drilled the rest out, result nackerd tap nackerd scriber but saved work piece, so my question is would the heating of it to such a heat a) changed the structure of the tap and made it more brittle as before the heat it wouldnt break up. b) i was just really paitant and as the scriber was harder then most things that would fit in to the hole it finally gave in don't laugh to much my pride is failing me

hi all again the barrel is nearly done just a couple more bending sesions then we should be there as mw said the next thing is the long join down the boiler tube, im guessing that a strip of copper the same as the boiler is used and rivited in a zig zag patten alternating side to side. will 1/16 copper rivets be ok to do this and how wide should the strap ideally be? many thanks once again mike |

Thread: Metal work at schools |
11/02/2012 21:49:39 |
hi all i left school in 2004 not that many years ago, as of the last few years in school i was the only person who had touched the lathes in many years. i for me think what was the road in to engineering apart from familey was the fact of 'work experience' i did 2 weeks in a local engineering workshop this then led me to get a job before i left school so the same week i was straight in to work, sadley the company went bankrupt but i learnt basic cnc programing and manual work one thing i will say is at school as others have said there was not one teacher that had used a lathe in say 10+ years i now only do it as a hobby i went down the automotive route and now have qulifacations in being a mechanic. i think if when work experience allows pick an engineering company if you can as this may be what opens the door to the engineering career that is wanted |

hi all when machining the slide valves is it the nut that holds them against the cylinder face? i will be ordering them this week just would like to know before i start the machining as im going to have to change a few measurements due to the previous builders positioning off the steam ports.

Thread: graphite yarn no thanks o-rings yes please |
04/02/2012 22:13:49 |
o rings in slight drag a hiss hiss sound when moving along the floor and rolls nicley so mayby i cracked it, i did test and trim approch as the previous builder of the model machined so many parts at differnt sizes to each other etc. this was the only way to ensure that they both would do the job
many thany thanks for the replys

i was thinking the trial and error method il machine the groves till theres a ittle compresson i guess ike you would have if you coverd one end of a outlet on a air ram?
wiv the graphite yarn pistons that are in the model at the mo when a steam port is coverd you get a restiance and if you slightly leave the port uncovered a smidge u get a nice sucking blowing sound mayby this is right already hmmmm whats your opinions on this?
sorry if this sounds stupid but in terms of loco building im a complete newbie iv built osscilaters an open crank 2 stroke demo model to my own crankcase deign and other parts for other hobbies and a battery loco built out of a 3 1/2 in gauge tich chasiss but this is my first proper venture down the steam avenue so am learning as i go on so all help is greatffuy received
