Thread: Nuisance phone calls
17/10/2020 18:28:56

We had it earlier this week, 'our Meile service contract has ended and we neeed to renew it'. It 18years old! What worries me is they knew our name, phone number and that we had a Meile machine.

Thread: Big Bang : Tallboy bomb
14/10/2020 09:31:33

Shortly after the war ended, I remember going out with my dad, and travelling up 'Caistor High Street', a B road running up the Lincolnshire Wolds. I still have a vague memory of bombs being stacked on the verges of the road, and thought it was just a false memory. With the joys of the internet, I was able to find out that bombs from RAF Ludford Magna were indeed stored on the side of the road!

Circuit diagram of my Axminster SX2sx2 wiring.jpg

12/10/2020 09:07:30

I have just looked at my SX2 wiring diagram, assuming the circle with a 'M' in it is the motor, it has 8 wires going to the controller! If i had won it, my plan was to replace all the electronics with a Arduino controlled brushed motor, which I have used in other projects.

JasonB is correct, on my around 7 year old mill round the back there is a DIN type connector and a screw in fuse holder with a small glass fuse.

Try Arceurotrade, advert in top RH corner! They are very helpfulll. If its the one off Ebay, I looked at it, but it went beyond my budget, considering the price of a new board if required.

Thread: What plastic for a mower deck
05/09/2020 15:48:20

My son has just done the opposite, lined a cracked plastic mower body with steel!

Acrylic can be moulded, I just heat with a hot air gun, but it is breakable. Polycarbonate is pretty tough, but have never tried bending it. At work we made some reverse acrylic printed signs for outdoors, the vandals smashed them! So we made them out of polycarbonate, they could not break thenm so they torched them!

Thread: Is there any tips for sawing aluminium
04/09/2020 16:04:44

At work they cut a lot of aluminium section, from memory its a DeWalt chopsaw with a aluminium cutting blade, which are available.

Thread: Trembling laptop
15/07/2020 11:06:56

Trembling or tingling? I keep all my old laptops, and the on the older ones the battery does not hold a charge, and they are effectively mains laptops. Could it be the fan or hard drive stop when the power is turned off? I certainly have a noisy fan on one of my old laptops.

Thread: cateracts.
12/07/2020 21:49:42

My big sister (86) and my friend across the road (in her 70's) have had the op without any problems, the main thing is to take care afterwards.

I'm 80 and my optician was warning me that I have cateracts, but not enough to be a worry for a couple of years, and said its better than going to the dentists!

Fate took a hand on the night of 2/3 March, when I had an RAO (Retinal Artery Occlusion, an eye stroke), this has left me with severe double vision in my right eye, as I have lost two of the muscles in it. I was prescribed a Fresnel prism lens, which helps tremendously, but still have several issues. After my first two appointments in hospital, all further booking were cancelled due to the present situtaion. The surgeon told me to stop driving, and notify the DVLA, and I need to take a DVLA sight test before I can drive again, and at present they are not carrying them out, not sure sure if I will pass the test anyway, when they tested my periphal vision in hospital, a light came on and you point at it, my wife says I missing by miles!

I did get a phone call from the Orthopist last Monday to see how I was getting on, one of my problems is that the brighter it is, the less colour and definition I can see, turns out thats probably my existing cataracts! Anyway on Tuesday I am having a video consultaion over the internet with her, hopefully I might find more out then!

Then by the time this is sorted, looks like I will be having the cateract op!

Thread: milling Acrylic
10/07/2020 15:45:11

I use Carbide Create on a 3018 CNC router, usually with a 3mm or 1.5mm bit. Speed is set at around 4000rpm, depth per pass 0.5mm, feed rate 150mm and plunge of 100mm. Not fast, but works for me!

Thread: I'm thinking of selling up, whats it worth?
10/07/2020 13:00:38

If you go the Ebay way, have a look at their Classified Adverts, £9.99 insertion fee, but no final sales charge. Be aware the rules are different from the auction side. I succesfully sold my deceased cousins ride mower for over 2 grand, and insisted on cash payment only!

Thread: Unkown plastic

Please remember that many plastics give off toxiic fumes when burnt. At work we did not cut any unidentified plastics on our commercial laser cutter.

Thread: DYMO labels [safe removal] ... what method ?
20/06/2020 18:54:06

Or use a decal remover wheel in your drill, so much easier if you have a lot to do!

Thread: Gear software
19/06/2020 15:57:20

8mm Foamex PVC gears cut on small CNC router using the Wooden Gears software, this is a prototype final version will probably be Perspex, Its for controlling a water valve using a Arduino Uno and a L298 motor driver, Another of my crazy projects!valve gears.jpg

Thread: Harold Hall - Tool & Cutter Sharpening - How big the base board?
19/06/2020 11:11:03

Mine is on a 24" x 16" x 1/8" steel plate, with an Axminster Grinder and whetstone mounted on it. I use magnetic clamps on it, a lot easier to change position. It lives on a narrow side bench, just lift it over to my workbench when required, it does not move far!

Thread: Source of CNC plastic for software proving purposes

Try Easy Composites Ltd, they list foam block for hand/machine carving.

Thread: Sort of a Straw Poll
12/05/2020 20:31:53

Just taken delivery of an Axminster C2 Lathe (10% off online order), TNT delivered it yesterday on a before 12 delivery, it arrived at 8.05am, and I was still in bed! The kind driver carried the lathe, on a pallet into my garage, and went on his way. He had a pickup next, which was at our works, and my sons soon knew I had a new lathe!

Anyway, I'm 80, might have a few years left, and I wanted a small lathe to have in the house, I had an eye stroke at the beginning of March, and have double vision and a job focussing, and it will be warmer in winter! Won't be spending any money on pub meals and holidays this year, so the garden and my mini workshop will keep me happy.
