Thread: The Fount Of All.... Hignorunce?
14/02/2022 18:59:12

You have to watch out with some of this online stuff whether they are having you on or just don't know what they are talking about. Somewhere out there is a video instruction to tie a bowline but with the 'free end' as the standing line. Not only confusing but also unsafe.

Thread: How to eject short 2MT from sleeve?
11/02/2022 16:28:15

A selection of ball bearings is useful but must be small enough not to jam in the taper themselves. On a lathe tailstock where the screw doesn't reach the drill owing to a missing tang the ball will helpfully roll out afterwards.

Thread: What happened to factory rejects?
10/02/2022 10:03:36

A friend of mine used to run an animal feed mill. Feed is made to specific protein and carbohydrate specs, regardless of actual source of that ingredient, which is how the whole BSE thing happened, one of his ingredients was chopped up Kitkat including foil and wrappers.

If you go round a far eastern market there will be stall full of T-shirts with company logos, I've even seen my own employer's ones. They are the excess made in case of rejects that weren't needed.

Thread: Engine nobody wanted
08/02/2022 18:57:39

Bill, It was a nice offer but people are sometimes a bit reluctant to grab free stuff or feel like Derek, plus it was only two days ago and some people only check the forum or even emails once a week.
But it will be even better if you get inspired to work on it yourself. You might get some encouragement from your local club. Where abouts are you?

Shouldn't they be making one?

Thread: Read the T-shirt
08/02/2022 13:43:48

Perhaps the website could have a headline banner with slogan of the day.

'Don't ask me - go read a book' needs to be updated to 'Ask Google not me' or 'yes there are stupid questions and you seem to be asking them'

Thread: Running a Myford S7 in Reverse
07/02/2022 20:41:31

You will be screwcutting in back gear so it is pretty slow anyway. However it is also a good idea anyway to make a mandrel handle so you can go even slower and provide rapid braking if necessary. Also reverse can then be applied quite quickly but remember to withdraw the tool first.

Thread: workshop floor - strength question

. There is no point in heating a machine so go round it. .

Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 07/02/2022 11:19:32

How about the opposite. Just heat the machine say to 22C with sheet and blanket over it when not in use. Avoids rust. Then stand on a duckboard which has a small heater panel if your feet get cold and a radiant heater aimed at your back if your body gets cold.

Instead of the electric wires look at water pipe type of underfloor heating. You might find an offcut available cheap for a small shed area. Then you can have a variety of heat sources to warm the water tank. You can embed the pipe in/under the 4in reinforced concrete without wasting thickness on a low strength screed.

Sorry to cause offence br, I'm an engineer of course.

Please note that this money comes from us TAXPAYERS. I detect an inappropriate political jibe in the title.

Thread: A puzzle and small disaster
05/02/2022 09:40:26

On a faceplate do you pack it off the surface at the spokes or rim? or accept a small groove in the plate as you clear the edge?

Thread: Should I scrap this reel of filament?
04/02/2022 13:31:30

Thanks for the temperature advice. Will stick to like warm and crystals then.

03/02/2022 21:11:18

I think printing any kind of container is wasteful when there are so many plastic packaging boxes around from buying other things. There are food dryers for making eg dried apple slices that are only used for a short period of the year, or metal containers like stock pots and marmalade pans which can be used if warmed up by a suitable heat source, eg light bulb underneath, soldering iron etc.
But does anyone have a recommendation for the temperature to aim for. - I'm thinking just above 100C for PLA.

Thread: Setting up my workshop
02/02/2022 13:15:23

No, far too much empty floor space there. You can fit in at least one more lathe, a band saw, an air compressor, 3 locos on build stands, You see that small board under the broom - that is the only permitted spare space. laugh

You can get vacuum attachments for airlines which makes more sense - they are possibly more compact than a regular vac. I recently got an air bed pump from a skip which might be less dangerous for those that insist on the practice. The advantage I find with using a vacuum rather than a blast is that when I inadvertently do suck up a small thing I took two hours to make I know it is somewhere within a 1cu ft container not somewhere within a 500cu ft workshop.

Thread: What are the yellow fittings please
30/01/2022 19:10:48

When you think about the construction of Brunel's broad gauge track it wouldn't have suffered from this. Another tick in the box for that man,

Vintage Gauge 1 enthusiasts will of course have recognised it as stud contact track (modernised).

Thread: Metal Cleaning Using Vinegar?
30/01/2022 18:33:27
Posted by SillyOldDuffer on 30/01/2022 15:45:32:

Why do you chaps want to mess with Vinegar, Citric Acid and Black Treacle when the UK is full of Motor Factors all selling several different commercial Rust Removers and Rust Protection products?

because they are just phosphoric acid in buffered solution at ten times the price or chelates (an organic process even more expensive eg Evaporust)

We tried molasses in the Men's shed a few years ago. It only worked if you got the dilution right as per some recipe found on the internet and went mouldy.

Wire brushing is good but some nooks and crannies are inaccessible.

As I keep saying just get some liquid phosphoric acid and only use it by brushing it on not dunking things. I got 500ml at an ME exhibition about 20 years ago and it only ran out a couple of years ago and I do far more derusting than most model engineers I know.

Seems like something that should be realised in OpenSCAD to be customisable.
