Thread: Old lathes |

If you are looking for an old lathe to play with a less well known make may be a cheaper option. |
Thread: Latest ME, ELS Article |

i would like to fit a system on a Colchester student..will it handle 6tpi and 4.5 tpi threads? 2 inches diameter in steel? It would be a lot cheaper to just get the extra change wheels to modify the existing thread selections on the QCGB. However it is such a capable lathe that if they didn't provide for such a course thread it might be unwise to try it, especially if you insist on high chip load, |
Thread: Warco Economy Mill |

It is worth way more than £50. Any 4 step pulley and a bit of engine-uity can sort out the drive. Measure the belts needed once you have that sorted out. |

PS Younger guys will give an answer before 7.00am You mean before going to bed after they get back from clubbing? BTW this 'long radius' thing is common model engineer practice making expansion links on steam engines. Edited By Bazyle on 05/09/2023 11:08:23 |

Quite easy really. |
Thread: An unexpected weight |
05/09/2023 09:07:12 |
Rather unusually I picked up some pears at the community garden on Saturday and have just tried weighing them. Very repeatable narrow range at 830, 820, 810g each so perhaps they can zero in on a particular weight. Did it include the packaging? |
Thread: The crumbly concrete problem |
04/09/2023 21:01:22 |
Anybody approving construction with a design life of only 30 years should be strung up - Where I was working in about '85 the grade 2 listed Victorian house was demolished to be replaced with a modern block in fancy brick and concrete needing lots of 50ft piles into the clay. They left the two WW2 single storey 'temporary' hospital buildings. Two other big concrete panel factory buildings went up the next year, one custom built for housing a multimillion pound specialist test facility. Soon after I left in 2000 the company moved out and it was replaced with a housing estate. All that heavy duty concrete barely used for 15 years so why bother. |
Thread: Drill press vice jaws |
01/09/2023 21:33:33 |
It's just a drill vice so nothing to hold the jaw parallel. A better quality vice would deliberately align to a non parallel workpiece to hold it better. |
Thread: Local BBC radio visits EDMES |
01/09/2023 21:24:42 |
EDMES got a visit from the local BBC Radio Devon team. You'll have to make do with the single photo of Pete (chairman), Rockey, and Ces (secretary) as this is radio not TV. But all publicity is good as they say. There are more photos of the club on Facebook. Having an open day on Sunday with the model boat club and the smaller model railways as mentioned in the program so getting these people along was quite a scoop. |
Thread: Help, my garden fork is........forked! |

Gardening is for control freaks, leave it alone, something will grow. 😜 That's the trouble it won't stop growing. Postie does a splendid job of getting up the path past the fuchsia when its prop falls down but hundreds of other bushes keep blocking access to the shed. At least the rabbits keep the grass in check. |

Don't heat it as that might reduce the temper and make it permanently weak. Just use a scaffold pole to bend it back. |
Thread: Bell Metal - What is it good for? |
27/08/2023 17:33:50 |
If you are thinking of casting it into a more useful shape, eg round for bearings, just add some more copper which is much more readily available than tin. |
Thread: Indexing jig |
27/08/2023 13:32:35 |
If you skim off the periphery to make a wider section can you get two rows in? Or a row on each face too. Sometimes it is better to be simple with only 8 holes to make it less likely to miscount. |
Thread: What is this? |
26/08/2023 21:23:12 |
I suspect it is for cleaning up a bore that has become scarred or encrusted with gunk. Bit like a reamer but not a defined diameter. |
Thread: Forum Platform Changes - PLEASE READ |

Is the RCM&E forum in the new format? |
Thread: N D Willoughby 4-4-0 Pamela |

As this gauge is not UK but used on the east coast of USA you might do better to ask on the HSM forum. |
Thread: Microsoft works |
23/08/2023 15:43:21 |
Note that Libre uses its own format to save so you have to make a special copy for sending to people who use MS. Not sure what publisher provides but you may need some other program for that. |
Thread: ML10 oiling point puzzle. |

Looks like you could cut away part of the pulley to allow the larger nozzle to work. |
Thread: 3D Printed Hand Plane |

AKA "Granny's tooth plane" I think. |
Thread: Is a hammer on a surface plate worse than leaving a chuck key in? |

When I opened the link above ebay thoughtfully provided a popup "we have made some improvements".
