"free end"? are you using a tailstock? Work can "push off" without support from a tail stock...it can even with one if cutting force high enough this pushoff leads to part being larger at the furthest point from support.... symptomatically part isn't constant taper. if head, bed ,tailstock/center or slide misallignment taper tends to be constant. btw is compound slide in use?

Had set of "Christmas" bells that played carols etc... bels simply struck by hammer powered off solenoid controlled via micro... might be work looking for same second hand and use the notes required... these look like bells not clock gongs or bike bells...brass plated or simular |

Funny .Since we had the tool; takes minutes to realign and check and almost never need it now....aint life odd. |

Thread: How to check for parallel? |
15/02/2012 20:56:28 |
Rhum ? lines of latitude are parallel lines of longitude are parallel BUT MEET ---- spherical geometry Again we digress. Simple geometry surfices in workshop... These digressions don't answer the op. |

*think |
14/02/2012 22:24:22 |
btw Wolfie mentions "square" Two faces can be parallel and even if end faces are also parallel ,they might not be square....thick of parallelogram...or rhombus |
14/02/2012 22:20:36 |
quiet so Andrew But without surface plate? Straight edge and micrometer is next best. I thought railway tracks were parallel...so how do they make bends?...lol |

hate to cast a downer on this. If youngsters(yes we might think under teens but this now in uk means under 18!) are not allowed to buy any thing that may be used or modified into a weapon . How do we dare show them how to take inoccious bar and teach them how to make sharp objects ! Seriously I like the marking out tools and a small tool case....engins come and go but instuments are fo ever..the techniques of fabrication and 'calibration' will serve for all life. Scriber...simple turning..heat treat. Center punch ...simular.. Set square....precisiob filing etc. Center finder... Dividers.... Odd leg calipers... Saddly almost all pointy.... |

OK. Heres my input. Imagine cross slide has say 1thou play in X You take cut, this applies a force in direction to incresase the cut diameter. The tool and saddle move out (for front side tool towards you)..now you remove tool load and apply noted small but real load in opposite direction with DTI on far side...thus effect of play is doubled . Difference in wear TS end to HS end shows up as error on DTI... Yes I know it turns parallel...but if dti were on front not rear you wouldn't see error since , slide loaded in same direction. |

new problem added...It has been stated that "Any firm taking on under 18s. Need to have all staff CRB checked and "Child Protection" trained...apprentiships or even employment for under 18's looks dead in the water. |
