One of the unmentioned advantages of additive machining is internal cavities...both honeycomb for material reduction ( cost time weight) and embedded parts ..from metal inserts to other property of "plastic"...

Just for fused filament printers there are
Carbon fiber and glass in plastics ...widely done

Polyurethane parts with say abs bones...done
Temperature senitive plastics...change colour depwnding on print temp...done
Woodlike material..again temp sensitive so you can print "grain" as you go..even seen database of tree rings so print wood felled on given .

Nylon
Graphite loaded
Polyurethane
Pla
Abs
Polycarbonate
Igus bearing materials

And theres fused metal printing...think mig welder...

Size 17 motors...seem a bit little for that if direct drive

Firstly try it with no micro step or only half...the torque falls off as the degree of micro step goes up..and not in a linear way

Also mm/step
I think it goes like this...
Steps per rev x microsteppes /mmper rev...
Ie one rev =leadscrew pitch and that is achived( say 200 x8) by sso many steps..so
20 mm / (200*8) steps...
Ie 1/80 mm per step

On reply to a pm.
Enquiring after those filter parts I posted of earlier filter ...."the part was actually production for Rotorflush Filters....this is how the parts are made for production. .in fact these filters woulds exist in any economic form without 3d printing. Scale (quantity) means that dies for moulded parts would be prohibitive and would entail an assembly of parts where as the printed object comes of the printer practically finished. Offended?.. no not at all I guess I didn''t make the point I was after ..that the implications of " home" fabrication is akin to the change in the recording industry

Neil..some time ago the archive was printable or at least pdf formated. ....this was changed to stop what apeared to be collections being sold by third parties. If I remember correctly.

The point is that mew or mtm or whoever made a change to prevent what you suggest wouldn't happen because its too much bother.

If people can print there own magazine at home but don't ( in large enough proportion) then why isn't mew /me available to readily down load...no need to defend I am aware of the reality.


Again it is the discussion of the implications of the "law" that apears to permit "copying for your own use" when in the future all use might be own use.

I put this though out for the consideration.
Suggesting that the "law" once again is ill prepared for where technology has reached.
The conventional business model of making products that are safe from copying has to be seen to soon be dead. ( see record industry).
Successful business will adopt another model...

Thought it might have been fun to speculate..

I know of various "open" source repository.

My thought was , will the presumption that "patented" or otherwise design registered and protected designs ..clearly not intended to be open source..but its ok to replicate for your own use..as engineers ...where does this change from niche to norm..

It seems accepted that one can make for ones own use, a mechanism covered by patent.

Does/would/should this apply in the world where manufacturing is "possible" as required for ones own use..consequently all use
Imagine a day when everything is made ( maybe by print bureau) for ones own use.
Like print on demand..copy of the monalisa..certainly sir.

I am aware of ( some of) the limitations in 3d printing...but what do the readers think a world where print on demand is more mature and accepted.
No haulage. ( greatly reduced).
No recycling. ..chuck item finished with in reuse hopper.

No waste packaging... (see no haulage above)
No work..
??

Not downing your work. 21 C computer..camera...telescope.
Vs 17C two lens telescope and eye ball..

Suppose the differences are air clarity and "patience"..keep observing until clear

The thrill of resolving a point of light to a disc of light is indescribable.

Those parts are part of a rotor-flush filter head.
The filter screen is fitted (in this case 2) onto the y shaped manifold.
The rotors spin inside this screens, back flushing the mesh....
See rotor flush 's website. ..
These parts are funtional build.
The two or three or four heads wouldn't have been cost effective in the relatively low volumes.
But 3d printed parts have made the product viable

Now. ..filament auto change...on the fly eek!

3d scanner. ..mm resolution vs capacity vs cost..

And since 3mm filament is the largest readily available 2mm nozzle/hotend.

r home made filament at 5mm from pellets?

Will it ever end?...

I suspect the "worry" of M W. Was over electrostatic concerns

One ) graphite -carbon- and brushes for motors all conduct rather well and in electrostatic terms equally.

Two graphite vs motor brushes..

Firstly motor brushes are not fixed composition. .they are blends of graphite /binder /copper/ rarely now lead.
If one lucked out one might get a low copper brush and it might have good/excellent friction behaviour.

In low temp difference stirling engin there is on this scale little torque so along with good seal we also need lowest friction achievable. .this is part of why these low temp difference engins are largely recent due to material availability.

Funny I have read more than one reason for the abandonment of the ( 12") gun.
I recall the word Washington convention given as the reason ..
But then that was about thirty years for me

If stuck ( or don't have any better source).

Artists pure graphite pencils..
Ihave used these with some success.

You can even buy them in various grades.
My fav for this purpose are the hex section ones about 13 mm acros flats..these are "pure" graphite so no grade number

Feel free to correct/expand.

The tale of the M1 submarine has intresting points.

One it was one if three inter war ( ww1-ww2) submarines built with, I think, 14" guns..
During the build of its two sisters , a treaty banned such guns on subs.
The M2 andM3 have there own histories. .
During one exercise /trial of surface- fire- dive an accident occured.
The routine to surface and prepare for firing involves removing a tampon from the muzzle .of the piece.

Well the accident involved the outcome of not removing this plug...
When after the detonation the skipped asked what was there status. .some wag is reported to have said.."At anchor"..since the barrel had unwound and round/tampon/muzzle now rested on seabed linked to the breach by ribbons of smoking steel.

Re heart surgery.
An article I read in the seventies compared heart surgery to simple mechanics..transplant just like changing the cylinder head on an engin...while flying over the Atlantic. .at ten thousand feet..in a storm...where nobody holds spares...
