Thread: A moan - steel of mysterious composition |
30/06/2017 08:52:18 |
I find it very surprising that that every component isn't documented down to the batch /cast of the steel. But maybe the manufacturer didn't feel like shareing with you. That said more interesting might be the apparent variation of hardness across the section.... Work hardening would be my explanation. I don't expect any possible effect of radiation but repeated stress might be an intresting essay Edited By jason udall on 30/06/2017 08:54:54 |

One of the main problems flying London ( or Paris) Newyork supersonic. .was permission from the US end. With an American design..this might no longer be a problem. ...I guess environmental issues are more relaxed than the '70's. |

Thread: Why are my tools too high? |
04/06/2017 10:42:43 |
My guess. Op finds 8 mm "too small"..ie needs packing... Bought in 12 mm notional tooling ( because the manual says 12 mm....being myford I would bet it said something "imperial")... And then finds 12 ( are they all 12.00 mm?) too high...well sorry thats why we have shims... One other thing...on machines with significant "dive" ie tendency for tool to dive under load we might set tool high to allow it to be at right height under cutting conditions. .. esp in carbide tools. |
Thread: Bridgeport EZtrack |
31/05/2017 19:33:30 |
Thanks for the input. As to convert to manual..see no stress there..hand wheels still fitted..machine moves smoothly and ( to me) light enough... But from the rest of the comments it looks like resurrection of the control is a non starter there are gaps in the signal path...cable leaves pc mother board. ..leads to space ..other cable leads from space to motor drive. So as I say some thing unknown is missing.. My guess is find how to enable spindle ( its going to be a relay in series with spindle motor contractors coil. .) And using the spindle control gear, use as a manual mill adding DRO when needed...) Edited By jason udall on 31/05/2017 19:35:19 |

OK.. Looking at Bridgeport eztrack... quick look ...pc mother board based ccontrol. ..but no hard disk. .thusly no eztrack software.
Is it even available? Could I ever recover parameters to configure a fresh install?. Anyone got a parts manifest to at least identify any other missing cards? Failing that " convert" to manual. ..fine by me bbut how did the nc unit interract with spindle control. Regards Jason |

Cure time for bicarb is truly rapid. .sensibly instant... Works as filet Can be filed..just very hard bonds well to steel Wood plastics Not great on ali ( way better than raw).. Best effect .. wet both surfaces.. add sprinkle of powder...add further to build fillet as required |

Thread: Inverter problem |
27/04/2017 15:42:46 |
Indeed. I would put E stop into the drive... But the OP and his electrician might take the more obvious route of a DOL to protect / isolate the inverter and all downstream. |
27/04/2017 15:17:39 |
So you have in effect got the original 3 phase overload/switch gear "in the way " between inverter and motor. As has been said ..bad idea. Bad for inverter( they don't like their load going missing during run condition) Waste of the more finessed overload control the inverter provides. . In any case if possible use dol ( which retains the overload protection and handy emergency stop functions) between supply and inverter..and inverter directly to motor.. No reverse switch ..let inverter do this if needed If you have a hi/low switch gear on lathe then this can be used ( only with inverter off) ...but allowing for the increased current rating. ( I wouldn't use, it lock it in low and feed higher frequency for higher spindle speeds) br />) Edited By jason udall on 27/04/2017 15:21:39 |
Thread: New pound coin |
03/04/2017 20:34:31 |
For a while there was a coin ..name eludes me... from a central or Southern African country..again name eludes me... that was made to the same material. .dimensions. .just different head and face...thusly ..readily accepted by coin acceptors.... Of course since the exchange rate was about 100 to 1 the chance for mischief was there...only prob. Your average currency converter didn't stock that denomination... And now apparently many have been "restruck" for use as counterfeit Pounds. Ironically made for that african country by royal mint... |
27/03/2017 18:42:36 |
I note the new coin is twelve sided ( or 14 if we include "faces"). Now I note the twenty and fifty pence coins are what are known as constant radius...ie the one vertex is the center of the other side which in itself is a segment of a circle not a flat... All this so you can have coins with flats that can roll...down coin acceptors thought's. So how will a EVEN number of sides work? ( An aside..I suggested to the chap at my bank ...well I guess they a have thought that one out..."I wouldn't assume that" je said |
Thread: Drilling tiny holes. |
04/03/2017 14:07:36 |
I would worry less about rpm. than runout ( wobble).. If the drill chuck doesn't hold the drill straight and concentric. ..the drill tip will be moving in a circle. ..and obviously the drill will until stabilised by the work flail about in a circle .. A good center mark helps but if the run out is too bid then the drill tends to drill a less than perpendicular hole through the part. Imagine hole on top surface in one place but hole at bottom surface a fraction on mm "off". Rpm is not the most critical bit...but fastest in this case would be best. .but remember. ..peck the?hole. ..if you drill more than the diameter of the drill withdraw the drill and repeat...pecking away until through ..l |

When advisors to Napoleon were calculating the metre..designed to be a specific fraction of the equatorial circumference of the earth... And possibly more importantly NOT a yard. .. ironically the small errors in these calculations if done correctly ,would have been closer to a 36" rather than 39".. Now if a yard =1m Harmony would reign. .same unit just slice it in decades or binarys your choice... Btw like the write on tape..this thing is this long who cares how many inches /mm/barnes/angstroms/plank lengths |
