Thread: What did you do today? (2014)
30/05/2014 18:44:28
Ian..as I am sure Clive would tell you..super glue near optics is a very bad thing...tends to fog them up....there are specialist"non fogging" or low fume..but low fume isn't no fume...

Used to like blaser 2000...veg oil based...
Just payed to have 1600 l disposed of....nearly as expensive to get rid off as buy!

Re flickering. .
Do you really need to generate pseudo random on the fly?..
A long enough sequence in rom would do....
Or noise diode into a/d pin....but fixed sequence .or two sequences of differing lengths. ...
But hey its your thing...
Just a thought..the guys designing the original lamps strove to make the lamp as flicker free as possible...and now we take a perfectly good light source and much it up to make it more" real" we are truly mad
Thread: Metal Spinning in the Lathe

I second the above( edit well not ness neils but the first post neils happened while typing end edit)..annealing ss enough ( or at all)..will be intresting..and any ss that work hardens..will make you cry....but spinning does allow shapes not normally achieved by turning..

Thread: Chamfering on the lathe
24/05/2014 16:55:19
Jason B..indeed..never said it wasn't. I am trying to agree with you..

It just seemed after your initial post others seemed to "look" for complex ways of doing what if normaly a simple job.

To machine a specific camfer feature or even a large/long one ..yes a different approach but simple corner breaks or radi.....
Well you get the picture..

Or even gravers

It seems that the use of simple form tools is out of favour. ...

Gordon. .from the early days of mew..various simple projects in elecronics...if you can take a look....the intended audience might have coloured the approach. .thus a good place to start...

It ( not by me) has been said...don't grind on the side but maybe SHARPEN if needed...

....the trick is to know the difference .

Lofty..in fairness ..ten years?...
OK a new alarm for ?350 seems steep but they were willing to programme it to your key( yeah right..most learn the first key they hear).......
When the fobs for cars are about ?50..for a fivers worth of gubbins...but then how long will pulling the alarm apart .changing the backup battery..resealing it to suit...you have ten hours starting now.
Thread: Todays update from Bodgers Lodge

John..you save your "precision"..for the finished part. The intermediate steps and or tooling are just that.
For some the clearance between a washer and the bolt would need honing..fine if that's your interest..but polish does not equate to good engineering..as you know...good on you.
Maybe if more of us were brave enough to show this sort of thing then maybe less people would turn away from what can appear elitist.
Thread: Unknown Small Lathe.

Derek
.I can shed no light on this. .is that 20" ?
What a sweet little lathe. ..it is about the scale of one of the projects I wished to build at school but was beyond the resorces available (ws time) ..shame...maybe I should make one now?....mmmm

Thread: quickest way to bore a large hol using a lathe
16/05/2014 14:09:00
I will post my first thought to the TITLE of this thread...
..shaped charge..done in milli seconds...

Wouldn't even need lathe. ..
..I'll get my coat..
Thread: Precision diameters

And in centerless grinding..sparkout is the dwell at end of infeed that allows all tensions to zero out ( last couple of microns..) but too much dwell allows both grinding and control wheels to skid rather than cut.
15/05/2014 20:05:49
We used to run centerless grinders on plunge feed..I used to do the spc for them...doesn't matter what spc is..but we logged each part...working typically. .0.5 micron.for hundreds of parts...infact once warmed up I believe the error was shared with the instrumentation. .three hole carbide bushed air gauge. .resolving to 0.1 micron...finish ..well parts needed "roughing" up if too good ( never got that but there you go)..finish can be too good..mirror doesn't hold oil......
But again sparkout is critical. .too long and you glase the wheel and part stops spinning..
Thread: Soft Start For Electric Motor
15/05/2014 13:28:00
Static and phase converters...as I understand produce pseudo two phase..and as such deliver less power than expected from your nominal 3phase motor.
Also you still have that big clitch when you engage the motor...the power has to come from somewhere. .also this does not provide the softstart the op asked for.
All the above "change the motor for a 3phase"..with whatever converter preferred. ..Is there no single phase solution..maybe like the start/run capacitor solution. .

Given all that I would myself prefer the vfd solutions. ..and low torque at low rpm?..that might depend on your inverter...

Thread: Internal screw cutting using tap

What you doing?..chasing using a tap?...
Looks fine to me just obviously get tool "center" height right ..thats "right" which might not be at ccenter. .
Thread: Perfectly ground Twist Drills every time.
14/05/2014 12:56:34
At the risk of siding with anyone...I don't think we are in the "business" of making drills or grinding them..we work /sharpen drills to achive a result..a hole , round..parallel. ..straight..smooth..low or no burr..reasonable cutting load.and at right postion....I for one find shortening drills a trial..but a jig or even those horrid plastic drill sharpers gets me closer.....perspnally I work pilot hole..ream
..seams to work...
Btw spotting drills are fantastic. ..but don't look as sophisticated as normal twist drills..wonder why the difference..
Thread: Hardening screws for tool post
13/05/2014 22:28:01
Harden or not...use cap heads/grub screws..hard before you start...
It can also be argued to use over size screws and leave soft..but reduce contact point to avoid removal probs.
